Marquis Who's Who Honors Parastoo Azadi, PhD, for Excellence in Research Science

Dr. Parastoo Azadi has been noted for her distinguished tenure in various faculty positions at the University of Georgia

Dr. Azadi is a globally recognized expert in the field of glycoscience.

ATHENS, GA, August 28, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Parastoo Azadi, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Azadi is a seasoned researcher and faculty member at the University of Georgia in Athens (UGA) who joined the institution in 1994 as a postdoctoral research associate in the campus Complex Carbohydrate Research Center (CCRC). Throughout her career, she has worked her way up into leading roles. Dr. Azadi was promoted to senior research scientist at the Center in 2013. She later also became the executive technical director of the Center in 2017 and the associate director of the CCRC for Service and Training in 2021.

Dr. Azadi is a globally recognized expert in the field of glycoscience. With a rare breadth of expertise, she guides analyses of microbial, viral, plant and animal glycans, helping drive progress in glycobiology in academia and industry. For nearly three decades, she has directed the world's leading center for glyco-analytics techniques, the CCRC's Analytical Service and Training Laboratory, and multi-million-dollar efforts to develop improved tools for glyco-analytics.

As an expert in carbohydrate structural analysis, under her leadership her research laboratory has grown from what might have been considered a boutique for specialized analytic services into what is now recognized as a major force in driving consensus for carbohydrate and biopharmaceutical drug characterization and for providing outreach and training in the glycosciences to all interested parties worldwide. Dr. Azadi has notably collaborated with over 2,000 investigators and trained more than 3,500 scientists throughout her career.

Among other achievements, Dr. Azadi has directed numerous graduate and undergraduate students, including the next generation of glycoscientists. Moreover, Dr. Azadi had the opportunity to work closely with number of biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies on methods to characterize novel drug products and biosimilars. At the onset of the pandemic in 2020, she was among the first groups to report on the sugar chain structure on SARS-CoV-2's spike glycoprotein and later studied the glycosylation differences in the five SARS-CoV-2 variants, including the highly transmissible Delta and Omicron strains.

Dr. Azadi has served an instrumental role on various professional committees and organizations and provided expert advice to many committees within the US Pharmacopeia that has consisted of Biologics and Biotechnology and Glycoprotein and Glycan Expert Panel, Biotechnology Complex for Biologics and the Joint Standards Committee for Biologics. For the last six years, Dr. Azadi has organized the Satellite Meeting at the annual Society for Glycobiology in "Glyco and Biotechnology". She has been an ad Hoc reviewer for DOE, NIH, NSF and Health Canada.

Before joining UGA, Dr. Azadi worked in consulting at SGS as a senior scientist and study director in Ascot, U.K. She was employed by the organization from 1990 to 1994 and focused on completing structural characterization of native and recombinant proteins and glycoproteins for the pharmaceutical industry.

During her research career, Dr. Azadi has served as a principal investigator for the NIH-funded National Resource Center in Glycoscience and the U.S. Department of Energy-funded Center for Plant and Microbial Complex Carbohydrates and as a co-investigator and director for the User Facility at UGA for GlycoMIP. She has disseminated her findings in numerous book chapters, technical notes, and over 285 professional publications. Additionally, Dr. Azadi is an ad hoc reviewer for several scholarly publications, including the Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry, Analytical Chemistry, Glycobiology and the Journal of Biological Chemistry.

Dr. Azadi is highly educated, earning a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the University of London in 1987 and a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry mass spectrometry of carbohydrates from the Imperial College of Science, Technology, and Medicine in the U.K. in 1991. In addition to her degrees, Dr. Azadi remains abreast in her industry as a prominent member of the Society for Glycobiology.

In light of her achievements, Dr. Azadi was recognized with a Distinguished Service Award from the board of directors at SGF in 2022. She also received a Non-Tenure Track Faculty Research Excellence Award from UGA in 2023. Dr. Azadi attributes her success to hard work and having great mentors.
