Michael Roehrhoff Rickels, MD, MS, has been Inducted into the Prestigious Marquis Who's Who Biographical Registry

Dr. Rickels' research has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health and has contributed to the development of new therapeutic approaches in the treatment of diabetes.

    BRYN MAWR, PA, August 30, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Michael Roehrhoff Rickels, MD, MS, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. With more than two decades of excellence as a physician and scientist, Dr. Rickels has earned distinction as a Willard and Rhoda Ware Professor in Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases with the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. Having joined the university in 2003 as a Research Associate, he was appointed an assistant professor of medicine in 2006, and was promoted to an associate professor of medicine in 2013 and then to a full professor in 2018.

Dr. Rickels has focused his efforts on investigating new therapies and approaches to treatment for type 1 diabetes and cystic fibrosis-related diabetes. He provides care for individuals with these conditions while conducting patient-oriented diabetes research that aims at understanding the pathogenesis of different forms of diabetes and the in vivo mechanisms of new diabetes treatments. His research primarily regards counterregulatory mechanisms in the defense against hypoglycemia and islet function and replacement in type 1 diabetes and pancreatogenic forms of diabetes like cystic fibrosis-related diabetes.

In addition to his tenure with the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, Dr. Rickels serves as director of clinical science for Penn's Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism, director of translational research for Penn's Institute for Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, director of the radioimmunoassay and biomarkers core for Penn's Diabetes Research Center, and associate director of the Penn Center for Human Phenomic Science. Added to these roles, he is the medical director for the pancreatic islet cell transplantation program for the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Over the course of his career, he has contributed numerous articles to professional journals and chapters to the leading textbooks of internal medicine and endocrinology. Dr. Rickels' research has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health and has contributed to the development of new therapeutic approaches in the treatment of diabetes. Dr. Rickels has served as an elected councilor for the International Pancreas and Islet Transplant Association and as Associate Editor for leading journals of the Endocrine Society and American Diabetes Association.

Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Rickels earned a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from Colgate University in 1995 and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine in 1999. Following these achievements, he completed a residency program in internal medicine in 2001 and a postdoctoral fellowship in endocrinology, diabetes & metabolism in 2005, both also at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. He subsequently gained a Master of Science in translational research from the same institution in 2007.

Within the coming years, Dr. Rickels intends to help guide the approval of cellular therapies for treating patients with diabetes. He is most proud to have demonstrated the physiology of transplanted islet function in humans, having been a fellow at the University of Pennsylvania when the first islet transplant on a patient with type 1 diabetes was performed in 2001. His ultimate goal is to improve the lives of individuals affected by diabetes and move closer to establishing a cure for the disease.
