Hailing from a long and successful career in medicine and academia, Dr. Hundahl retired in 2019 as the chief of surgery for the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, VA Northern California Health Care System, and as a professor of clinical surgery at the University of California in Davis (UC Davis) after more than 15 years in both roles.

Garnering international success for his contributions as a surgical oncologist and investigator specializing in gastric cancer, Dr. Hundahl's research has encompassed computer-guided surgery for gastric cancer, the use of the Maruyama Index as a surgical quality metric, and additional studies in adjuvant chemo-radiation for gastric cancer. He has also participated in the ongoing development of the National Cancer Database. Among other professional accomplishments, Dr. Hundahl was responsible for numerous successful VA and U.S. Department of Defense clinical collaborations for the VA Northern California Health Care System.

Beginning his career more than 35 years ago, Dr. Hundahl maintained a private practice in surgical oncology in Honolulu from 1988 to 2002. He also served as the associate chief of surgery and as the chief of surgery at Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu between 1993 and 1995 and between 1994 and 2000, respectively.

Dr. Hundahl first taught in the classroom as an assistant professor of surgery in 1988, served as an assistant research professor and research staff member at the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii from 1993 to 2002, and was an associate clinical professor of surgery at the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii at Manoa between 1996 and 2002. Among other opportunities, Dr. Hundahl was the vice chair and chair of the Commission on Cancer in Chicago from 1996 to 1998 and from 1998 to 2000, respectively, and the medical director at Queen's Cancer Institute between 2000 and 2002.

He has also been a reviewer for numerous professional journals and was the medical editor for the Journal of Registry Management between 2000 and 2008.

Civically active, Dr. Hundahl has been a member of The Pacific Club in Honolulu, the Saint Botolph Club in Boston, and the Nantucket Yacht Club in Nantucket, Massachusetts. He was also active in various roles with the American Cancer Society, including as the president of the Honolulu chapter. Most notably, Dr. Hundahl co-founded and serves as the lifetime director, lifetime board member, and board of directors of Comprehensive Home Services Hawaii (now CareResource Hawaii), the largest nonprofit provider of home healthcare in Hawaii since 1986, which presently employs over 230 medical professionals and staff members.

In preparation for his medical career, Dr. Hundahl earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry, magna cum laude, from Harvard University in 1977. Continuing his studies, he received a Doctor of Medicine, cum laude, from Yale University in 1981. Additional educational pursuits to his credit include a general surgical residency from the University of Hawaii in Honolulu and a surgical oncology fellowship at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Dr. Hundahl received credentials as a physician in 1982 and as a board-certified surgeon in 1987.

Affiliated with numerous professional organizations supporting his work, Dr. Hundahl was elected as a fellow of the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Head and Neck Society, the Pacific Coast Surgical Association, and the American College of Surgeons. He also served in various roles as a member of the Pan-Pacific Surgical Association, the American College of Surgeons, and the Sacramento Surgical Society. Furthermore, Dr. Hundahl is a member of the International Gastric Cancer Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

As a testament to his success, Dr. Hundahl has been recognized with a Distinguished Service Award as the chair of the Commission on Cancer by the American College of Surgeons. He also received a Best Presentation Award from the World Health Organization, a Distinguished Service Award from the American College of Surgeons, a Nishi Award for Best Paper in Gastric Cancer by the International Gastric Cancer Center, and a Joan Oettinger Memorial Award from UC Davis School of Medicine. Dr. Hundahl has been included in several leading physician publications, such as Best Doctors in America between 1995 and 2020, and was named among the Top Surgeons by the Consumer Research Council of America. Additionally, Dr. Hundahl was recognized as an Honorary Commander, 60th Medical Group, Travis Air Force Base, in 2014, 2015, and 2016.
