Drawing on years of professional expertise in environmental health and safety, Mr. Lawe presently excels as a Safety Officer with the City of Rocky Mount. Since obtaining the role in 2018, he has maintained accountability for a variety of safety-related responsibilities, including inspections, safety training, hazard identification, workers' compensation oversight, and more. Alongside his work he chairs the City Safety Committee, and the City Vehicle Accident Review Board. He serves on the Health and Wellness Committee, and the Emergency Management Coordinating Committee. Prior to joining the City of Rocky Mount, he served as the Environmental, Health & Safety Manager and Continuous Improvement Manager and as a Production Manager with Berry Global Inc. Likewise, Mr. Lawe honed his expertise in extrusion management, team coordination, and field supervision.
During the early stages of his career, Mr. Lawe dedicated himself to his country through the United States Army. Between 1987 and 1997, he served as a soldier in Germany and in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Upon returning from his deployment, he served as a tank platoon leader, signal platoon leader, company executive officer, headquarters company executive officer, and battalion maintenance officer. In conjunction with his work, he contributed to his community as a first responder with Peninsula Packaging Company, Solo Cup Company, Alcoa Howmet Castings, and La Porte County EMS. Due to his vast breadth of knowledge, Mr. Lawe has also authored a number of publications, including "How Automation Can Accelerate Your Safety Program," which was published through the National Safety Council Public Eye on Safety.
An expert in his field, Mr. Lawe completed coursework in mass communications and media studies at Iowa State University. Subsequently, he expanded upon his professional knowledge, earning a Bachelor of Arts in journalism from the University of the District of Columbia, a master's degree in business administration from Indiana Wesleyan University, and several certifications through the Federal Emergency Management Agency. In recognition of his outstanding body of work, he was named a Survivor Advocate and a three-time Safety Ambassador through the National Safety Council and received several Safety Challenge Coins through the City of Greenville, the City of Rocky Mount, and the Rocky Mount Fire Department. For his dedication to his country, Mr. Lawe was also honored several times by the United States Army, earning five Army Achievement Medals, an Army Commendation Medal, Army Expeditionary Medal, Good Conduct Medal, the NATO Service Medal, and many more.
