FAIRBANKS, AK, September 18, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Lawrence K. Duffy, MS, PhD, professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, has been selected by Marquis Who's Who for a prominent feature in the Alaska regional edition of Forbes magazine.
Backed by four decades of professional expertise, Dr. Duffy has enjoyed an abundant career as a biochemist and educator. He commenced his tenure in chemistry as a teaching assistant at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and subsequently served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Reserve. Dr. Duffy then worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Artic Biology before joining the University of Texas Medical Branch, Harvard Medical School and Roxbury Community College as an educator.
Dr. Duffy returned to the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1987 and was the head of the department of chemistry and biochemistry in 1984. He later assumed the role of dean for graduate studies. Dr. Duffy was the director of the Resilience & Adaptation program from 2013 to 2020 and is currently a professor of chemistry and biochemistry. He believes strongly that the University of Alaska Fairbanks will continue to serve as an engine for economic growth because it offers superior training in basic science for future health practitioners. Presently, Dr. Duffy is focused on research to develop a northern dog model for aging.
Dr. Duffy has served in various advisory positions with Iḷisaġvik College in Alaska and the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District. Likewise, he worked with the Air Pollution Control Commission, the Alaska Basic Neuroscience Program, and the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology for Summer Undergraduate Research Program. A respected voice in his field, he previously sat on the editorial board of Science of the Total Environment, a peer-reviewed international journal. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
In a professional journey suffused with highlights, Dr. Duffy is most proud to have seized the opportunity to mentor countless students. Civically, he has been active with Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, the American Federation for Aging Research, and the Alzheimer's Resource of Alaska. To remain current with industry trends, Dr. Duffy maintains affiliation with the American Institute of Chemists, the Arctic Institute of North America, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Dr. Duffy received a Bachelor of Science in 1969 from Fordham University, as well as a Master of Science from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1972 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1977. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Boston University and the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology.
Over the years, Dr. Duffy has been recognized by the American Chemical Society, most notably in 2020, when he was presented with an award sponsored by the Camille & Henry Dreyfus Foundation for encouraging disadvantaged students to pursue careers in science. Additionally, he received the Bullock Award from the University of Alaska, the Irish Educator Award from Irish Voice, and the Excellence in Interdisciplinary Science Award from the Western Alaska Interdisciplinary Science Conference.
