SAN DIEGO, CA, September 29, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Leonard J. Srnka, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Hailing from more than 40 years of research experience, Dr. Srnka has distinguished himself at the University of California San Diego (UCSD), where he served as the first Professor of Practice at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography from 2013 to 2022 and is now Adjunct Professor there. Bearing a wealth of expertise in the areas of geophysical data analysis and interpretation, as well as land and marine electromagnetic methods, he develops and teaches graduate-level courses in geoscience at Scripps and advises students there in the pursuit of their degrees.

Prior to his current role, Dr. Srnka worked on plasma fusion energy at the Gulf General Atomics Company in San Diego, after which he joined ExxonMobil where he would earn distinction across a span of more than three decades. Beginning with the Exxon Production Research Company in 1979, he went on to hold a number of technical and supervisory positions in electromagnetic, seismic, and borehole research, and later availed himself at the Exxon Exploration Company as a specialist in potential fields and remote sensing research and applications. Following this period, which spanned from 1993 to 1998, he returned to ExxonMobil Upstream Research Company and conducted breakthrough research on Remote Reservoir Resistivity Mapping (R3M), which gleaned four industry accolades, including the Excellence Award for Technology Development at the 2011 World Petroleum Congress. Dr. Srnka subsequently served as chief scientist on numerous offshore electromagnetics surveys in North and South America, Europe, and West Africa between 2001 and 2009. He retired from ExxonMobil as Chief Research geoscientist in 2013.

Dr. Srnka initially studied engineering sciences at Purdue University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science, summa cum laude, in 1968. Following this accomplishment, he proceeded to the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in England, from which he graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in Physics in 1974. To facilitate his studies, he received the Marshall Scholarship, a British postgraduate scholarship that allows gifted Americans to attend any university in the United Kingdom. From 1970 to 1974 he was also an associate member of Corpus Christi College, University of Oxford, where he conducted experimental physics research toward his doctoral thesis at the nearby UKAEA Culham Laboratory. Dr. Srnka went on to take up a Visiting Scientist position at the Lunar and Planetary Institute from 1974 to 1979, where he performed research on the evolution of lunar and planetary electromagnetism and made important strides in advancing the theory of spontaneous magnetic field generation in hypervelocity impacts.

To remain aware of developments in his field, Dr. Srnka has maintained his affiliation with several relevant academic and industry organizations. In addition to his past service as president of the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers, he has been a member of the American Geophysical Union, the American Association of Petroleum Geology, and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, the latter of which bestowed on him the Virgil Kaufmann Gold Medal in 2007. Additionally, he has advised multiple government organizations and universities in the United States, including the National Science Foundation, Lehigh University, and Rice University. Furthermore, Dr. Srnka has served on the Marshall Scholar candidate interview panel for both the Houston (2002, 2009) and Los Angeles (2022, 2023) regions, and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Association of Marshall Scholars.

Well-regarded for his expertise in the field of geophysics, as well as his scholarly prowess, Dr. Srnka's research has been featured in various popular publications, such as the Wall Street Journal and Time magazine. He has also made more than 25 refereed contributions to various publications in the areas of planetary and space science, astrophysics, energy research, and hydrocarbon exploration, and has over 50 U.S. and foreign patents issued or pending.

Among his most cherished accomplishments, Dr. Srnka is most proud of his work in the analysis of magnetic fields on planetary bodies during his time in that area of space science, as well as his contributions to the energy industry in the discipline of sub-surface imaging. In accounting for his success, he largely credits the breadth and quality of his education, as well as the influence of his father who served as a professional electrical engineer. Looking toward the future, Dr. Srnka plans to continue his work at UCSD, where he hopes to remain connected to the latest developments in the field of geoscience.
