PRINCESS ANNE, MD, October 06, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Yancy L. Carrigan has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Mr. Carrigan retired from a long and successful career in journalism as a disc jockey for WESM-FM after more than 30 years on the air. Based in Princess Anne, Maryland, on the University of Maryland Eastern Shore campus, the public radio station broadcast covers Ocean City, Maryland, nearby areas, and streams worldwide. Featuring a variety of programming, including news and information, blues, world, American folk music, and gospel programming, Mr. Carrigan specialized in jazz, best known by his regular listeners as the "Morning Jazz Man."

Recognized after hearing that Mr. Carrigan played jazz at his local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) in Salisbury, he was offered a position to host at the station. Quickly accepting the opportunity, he immediately took over the Saturday afternoon programming, which included old-school rhythm and blues, and blues.

Joining WESM-FM in 1988 as a volunteer, Mr. Carrigan became a disc jockey at one of the country's few remaining mainstream stations. During his distinguished tenure, he broadcasted jazz shows four mornings a week for 23 years. He also hosted two shows on Saturdays, the soul and rhythm and blues show "Music From the Wax Museum" and the blues show "The Blues Train." Additionally, Mr. Carrigan served as the station's music director. Upon his retirement, he spent another two years volunteering for the station on Saturdays. He hosted the Saturday programs a total of 34 years.

Mr. Carrigan spent 20 years working for DuPont after being honorably discharged from his military service in 1973. He eventually began DJing in his free time. Once approached by WESM-FM, he pivoted to pursue his passion for music while still working at DuPont and became a "mobile DJ" for 24 years.

As a longtime resident of the area and retired military personnel, Mr. Carrigan is a Lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans, VFW, American Legion, and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. He is also a Lifetime member of the Morgan State University Alumni Association.

Born and raised in Salisbury, Mr. Carrigan studied locally, graduating from Morgan State College (now Morgan State University) in Baltimore with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1969. He was a member of the Reserve Officers' Training Corps program for four years. Mr. Carrigan was subsequently commissioned into the U.S. Army as a 2nd LT. in 1969 during the Vietnam War, which ended abruptly after being shot by a sniper and spending 16 months recovering at Walter Reed Medical Center. Mr. Carrigan attained the rank of Capt. and was honorably decorated with a Purple Heart and other military service medals.

Mr. Carrigan's success has been publicized in local newspapers such as The Salisbury Independent, and The Daily Times, part of the USA TODAY network, and the book "Compass Points Vol 3." Grateful for his accomplishments, he notes what an incredible journey his career has been doing what he loved most.
