Michael D. Hirsch, MS, MEDL is the founder of Literacy Rescue



Mr. Hirsch is a teacher, coach, author and nonprofit leader who has dedicated nearly three decades to promoting avenues for success through education.

    CHICAGO, IL, October 10, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Michael D. Hirsch, MS, MEDL has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Mr. Hirsch is a teacher, coach, author and nonprofit leader who has dedicated nearly three decades to promoting avenues for success through education. He completed an Associate of Arts in liberal arts at Oakton Community College before enrolling at Northeastern Illinois University, where he completed a bachelor's degree in Physical Education in 1996. While a student at Northeastern Illinois University, Mr. Hirsch served as a student manager for esteemed basketball coach Rees Johnson, whose 40-year career, high standards, and compassion for student athletes inspired Mr. Hirsch's own passion for coaching. In 2003, Mr. Hirsch graduated from Chicago State University with a master's degree in Physical Education, and in 2019 he completed an additional master's degree in Educational Leadership and Administration at Northeastern Illinois University. He holds a Special Education certification from Roosevelt University (2005), and is currently working toward a master's degree in multisensory learning.

Upon graduation a position opened up on the staff and Mr. Hirsch began coaching at Northeastern Illinois Division I University for Men's Basketball in 1996. Mr. Hirsch went on to be the Head Coach at William Rainey Harper College. Harper's 1999 team still holds many school records including a third place finish at the National tournament. Mr. Hirsch was a finalist for the National Junior College Coach of the Year. His 2004 Grayslake Girls Basketball team was the first team program in the history of Grayslake High School to make a trip downstate. Grayslake was 30-4 and made it to the "Elite Eight". Mr. Hirsch transitioned to industry, working at Dental Health Products, Inc. from 2010 until 2012 and a Chicago Bulls game day statistician for the 2011-2012 season. After three years as a field sales consultant for Henry Schein, Mr. Hirsch returned to education as a special education teacher and case manager for Chicago Public Schools, where he continues to work with students.

Inspired by his experience working with students at all levels and all levels of academic need, Mr. Hirsch began publishing on topics in education and leadership in 2021, and in 2022 he founded Literacy Rescue www.literacyrescue.org, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing literacy interventions for students unable to read at grade level, particularly those affected by dyslexia. He is the author of "This is What I Need From You: How to Bring Out the Best in Your Subordinates and Yourself," an educational manual about developing respect in the classroom and the workplace that he hopes will be a "reset button" for classroom and workplace management challenges. In addition to his work in the classroom and the community, Mr. Hirsch returned to coaching in 2023 as an assistant men's basketball coach for Kennedy King Community College. Mr. Hirsch runs the student athlete study halls for all student athletes at the college.

In recognition of his commitment to excellence, Mr. Hirsch was presented a 2014 Project Hope Award. 2011 Rookie and Goal Buster of the Year. He credits his success to the work ethic instilled in him by his mother, and to the constant support of his family, friends, and mentors. In the coming years, Mr. Hirsch hopes to expand his community literacy advocacy to work in the prison reform space, creating opportunities and training pathways for those exiting the prison system. In his personal time, Mr. Hirsch is a supporter of area dog rescues, an avid golfer, fitness practitioner, and enjoys spending time with his daughter and his Goldendoodle, Winston.
