Driven to pursue a career in service to others, Dr. Edelen embarked on a journey into the field of medicine. After completing a Bachelor of Science in pre-professional sciences at the University of Notre Dame in 1979, he decided to specialize in dentistry, earning a Master of Science in oral biology and a Doctor of Dental Medicine from the University of Louisville in 1983. Subsequently, Dr. Edelen expanded upon his professional knowledge and completed a residency in orthodontics at his graduate alma mater.
Backed by his extensive education, Dr. Edelen began his career as an assistant professor in the University of Louisville's Department of Orthodontics and in private practice with the eponymous Edelen Orthodontics. Over the years, he grew with the University, becoming a clinical associate professor, a role he maintained for many years before retiring in 2021. Due to his vast breadth of knowledge and experience, he has had work published in such publications as the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. Outside of his work, Dr. Edelen leverages his expertise as an orthodontic consultant for the Kentucky Commission for Children with Special Health Care Needs' Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Anomaly Team.
In order to remain abreast of changes in the field, Dr. Edelen is affiliated with the Kentucky Association of Orthodontists, the University of Louisville Orthodontists, the University of Louisville Orthodontic Alumni Association, the Louisville Dental Society, the Kentucky Dental Association, the American Dental Association, the American Association of Orthodontists, and the Southern Association of Orthodontists. For his professional accomplishments, Dr. Edelen has been recognized by the Consumer Research Council of America, Kentucky Monthly Magazine, Louisville Magazine, and the University of Louisville. He was named the Distinguished Alumni of 2018 for the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Louisville. In 2021, he was also honored as one of America's Best Dentists by the National Consumer Advisory Board.
While his career has been filled with standout moments, Dr. Edelen is most proud of training residents from different parts of the world. The cornerstone of his overall success lies in effectively communicating with referring doctors and ensuring that his patients complete their treatments within a timely fashion. He has definitely been blessed with wonderful patients and an awesome, dedicated staff his entire career.
