RICHMOND, TX, November 07, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Carlos Enrique García has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. García enjoyed a successful and fulfilling career in the oil and gas industry that spanned nearly four decades. Now retired, he is best known for his leadership as the Global Discipline Head for Process Automation, Control and Optimization for Shell Oil Co. Well regarded for his contributions to the field, he is a 2023 inductee into the Control's Process Automation Hall of Fame.

Born in Puerto Rico to a medical doctor and an elementary school teacher, Dr. García was raised with a passion for learning. Upon graduating from high school, he enrolled in the University of Puerto Rico Engineering School to pursue a degree in civil engineering. However, shortly after commencing his studies, Dr. García's academic advisor recommended that he change paths to pursue chemical engineering, an extremely challenging field of study that was experiencing a surge of interest in Puerto Rico at the time. After careful consideration, Dr. García heeded the advisor's recommendation, ultimately graduating at the top of his class.

Determined to continue his education, Dr. García obtained a PhD in chemical engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he was honored with a Student Paper Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. His thesis, completed between 1977 and 1982, focused on advanced computer control technology during the embryonic years of real-time computing. In collaboration with his advisor, Professor Manfred Morari, he uncovered the theoretical underpinnings behind existing model-based control algorithms, resulting in several seminal published papers. One of them was an algorithm patented and published by Shell Oil Co., a pioneer in the field. Following the completion of his thesis, Dr. García joined Shell's process control research group in Houston, where he and his team continued to improve upon the algorithm he had studied in his thesis, developing tools to help engineers design and monitor these systems in refineries and plants. He published over 50 refereed papers and several books as a result.

Over the course of his career with Shell Oil Co., Dr. García had multiple technology leadership roles in research and manufacturing. In his last role as the global head of his discipline, he had the pleasure of traveling extensively, meeting with many of the 1,200 engineers from 40 countries for which he had skill pool responsibilities. During his travels, he had the unique privilege of providing guidance and support to this diverse group of individuals, which he found personally rewarding. Mentoring had been a passion for Dr. García during his whole career being one of the founders of the Shell Hispanic Employee Network.

Dr. García enjoys playing the guitar and piano and singing in choirs at his United Methodist Church, where he also teaches Sunday school. He and his wife, Griseida, have been married for 42 years and have one son.
