    HOUSTON, TX, November 27, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Gerald Lawson Gill, professor emeritus of James Madison University, was selected by Marquis Who's Who for a prominent feature in the Virginia regional edition of Forbes magazine.

Having achieved more than three decades of professional experience, Gerald Lawson Gill retired from James Madison University in 2010, at which point he was recognized with the title of professor emeritus. During the course of his career, he held several important roles in the realm of library science, including as a cataloger, reference librarian and, ultimately, the head of reference and government documents. Committed to demonstrating leadership in his field, Mr. Gill served as a faculty senate member for two terms from 1975 to 1979 and 1996 to 1998. He was also the chair of the curriculum and instruction committee.

Among his most cherished accomplishments, Mr. Gill is proud to have availed himself to his colleagues and the field by spearheading the creation of a Business Reference and Services Section (BRASS) within the American Library Association, which expanded to encompass over 700-800 librarians. The section has helped to cultivate a network of clients to share business information, which has benefitted many professionals and their families within the national organization.

Mr. Gill has served on the James Madison Journal editorial board and was a reviewer for the American Reference Books Manual. Well-regarded for his scholarly output, he has contributed a wealth of articles to various professional journals. He has maintained affiliation with several relevant organizations, including the Virginia Library Association as a parliamentarian and councilor, the Virginia chapter of the Special Librarians Association as its president from 1986 to 1987, and the American Library Association as the chairman of its business reference services committee from 1984 to 1986. Additionally, he has been a member of the honorary society of Phi Beta Delta since 2007.

Mr. Gill studied history, philosophy and religion at the University of Georgia, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1971. He went on to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he received a Master of Arts in library science in 1973. Mr. Gill subsequently undertook postgraduate coursework in business administration at James Madison University from 1978 to 1979.

Mr. Gill received the Gale Research Award for Excellence in Business Librarianship, which honored his achievements as an educator and leader, from the American Library Association in 1991.
