Joan Ava Gillman shared her professional achievements and industry expertise in Forbes magazine



Honored as Teacher of the Year, she received the Urhy Thompson Award from the Calhoun School and the Young Teachers Incentive Award from the Professional Children's School.

    TEANECK, NJ, November 27, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Joan Ava Gillman, educator at The Browning School, was selected by Marquis Who's Who for a prominent feature in the Northern New Jersey regional edition of Forbes magazine.

Joan Ava Gillman is a nationally-recognized K-12 educator celebrating more than four decades of service to her students and profession. She is an elementary educator of K-8 who served the Browning School in New York as a science teacher for second, fifth and sixth grade from 2018 to 2019 and second, fourth and sixth grade since 2019. Throughout her illustrious career, she has found great satisfaction working with middle school-aged children. As a licensed K-8 educator in New Jersey, with additional endorsements in K-12 education for students with hearing impairments, she has been a certified educator through National Geographic since 2019.

Ms. Gillman's career began in 1982 as a fifth-grade classroom teacher at St. Angela Merici School. She relocated to Joytown Kent Elementary School the following year to teach fourth and fifth-grade students and spent two years as a language arts and social studies teacher at the Bede School in Englewood, New Jersey. Ms. Gillman joined the staff of the Professional Children's School in New York City in 1986, where she would remain for the next two decades teaching all academic subjects for students in fourth and fifth and grade as well as sixth-grade math and science. In addition, she served as a teacher advisor for the Middle School Council. She left the Professional Children's School in 2006, teaching at Anna C. Scott Elementary School and Yeshivat Noam until 2008, whereupon she returned to New York and taught for the next 10 years as a fifth- and sixth-grade science teacher at the Calhoun School.

In addition to her work in the classroom, Ms. Gillman is an accomplished performance pianist and violinist. She is in several orchestras, including the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, the August Symphony Orchestra and the North Jersey Symphony Orchestra. Moreover, Ms. Gillman is a member of the Science Teachers Association of New York State, the National Science Teaching Association, Science Educators for Equity, Diversity and Social Justice (SEEDS), and Kappa Delta Pi. Notably, her article "Bridges, Buildings and Structures, Oh My!" was published in the Science Teachers Bulletin (STANYS).

Ms. Gillman draws upon a Bachelor of Arts in education, summa cum laude, from Felician College – now Felician University – earned in 1980 and a Master of Arts in education from New York University earned in 1982.
Honored as Teacher of the Year, she received the Urhy Thompson Award from the Calhoun School and the Young Teachers Incentive Award from the Professional Children's School. In 2018, she was named an ambassador of the Half-Earth Project. In addition, she was an Educator Ambassador for the NASA Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution Mission Program. Likewise, she subsequently completed a mentorship program through the Modern Classroom Project in 2022.
