Candice Lee Castro, MD, Recognized by Marquis Who's Who

Candice Lee Castro served as a board certified general surgeon



Reflecting on a long career, she attributes much of her success to her hard work and dedication, as well as the support of her students, patients, and peers.

    SAN ANTONIO, TX, November 29, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Candice Lee Castro, MD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Drawing on over four decades in the medical field, Dr. Castro specialized in general surgery. Prior to her retirement in 2006 and starting in 1981, she was a medical doctor and a general surgeon for the United States Army for 25 years, serving in Army medical centers, community hospitals, and field hospitals. She was deployed to Afghanistan in 2003 and to Iraq in 2005. Post retirement, and as of 2007, Dr. Castro has found much success as a volunteer instructor for the Department of Hospital Education at Brooke Army Medical Center, teaching Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support. She also teaches Advanced Trauma Life Support for the Army.

Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Castro pursued an education at the University of South Florida, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Natural Sciences and a Doctor of Medicine in 1976. Subsequently, she completed her residency in general surgery at the University of South Florida in 1981. As a commitment to her field, she is a member of industry-related organizations, including the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society 2021, American College of Surgeons, Society of Army Physician Assistants, and Pi Alpha National Physician Assistant Honor Society Faculty. Likewise dedicated to civic advocacy, Dr. Castro volunteers for Catholic Charities, teaching English as a Second Language to refugees and asylees from the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Americas.

Among her professional accomplishments, Dr. Castro is most proud of her work with and the academic achievements of her physician assistant students (aka Physician Associates), whom she taught for 15 years, both as active duty and after retirement from the Army. She is also proud of her proctoring Korean medical students from Yonsei University in Seoul, and U.S. Special Forces medics during their hospital rotations in Korea. Reflecting on a long career, she attributes much of her success to her hard work and dedication, as well as the support of her students, patients, and peers. Looking toward the future, Dr. Castro aspires to continue volunteering at Brooke Army Medical Center, serving as guest instructor in PA programs, and teaching English for Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of San Antonio.
