Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Leveraging more than two decades of excellence in architecture and education, Dr. Santamaria has earned distinction as a professor, Department Chair, and currently Associate Dean for Academic Operations for the New York Institute of Technology School of Architecture and Design. He is also a member of the OAI, the national licensure organization in Italy and Europe. Added to these, he contributed greatly to the American Institute of Architects in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy and received recognition for his proposal focused on enhancing resiliency measures.

Prior to his current position, Dr. Santamaria served as a contract professor and postdoctoral researcher for Politecnico di Milano in Italy starting in 2004 and became Visiting Professor for the New York Institute of Technology School of Architecture and Design in 2016 and Associate Professor in 2019.

Among his professional accomplishments, Dr. Santamaria is best known for pioneering and introducing the concept of landscape urbanism 16 years ago within the School of Architecture and Design. He received a Presidential Award from the New York Institute of Technology in 2019 and was honored with a Distinguished Teaching Award in 2023 in recognition of his exemplary contributions to the School of Architecture and Design, his dedication to pedagogical development and his outstanding commitment to academic service as a full-time faculty member.

To prepare for his professional journey, Dr. Santamaria earned a bachelor's degree in architecture from IUAV, University of Architecture of Venice in Italy in 2001. Within the coming years, Dr. Santamaria intends to continue excelling in his role while preserving the current vision of the New York Institute of Technology's School of Architecture and Design, collaborating with the dean, faculty and the broader school community to foster ongoing enhancements and bolster the institution's effectiveness. He is particularly proud that many of his students have gone on to pursue graduate programs at Ivy League institutions, occupying distinguished positions and authoring influential scholarly works for their own careers. Accounting for his success, he credits passion for his field and his commitment to continual self-discovery through his exploration of the world.

Dr. Santamaria strongly believes that academic environments are places where collaborative experiences can be nurtured, where the gap between thinking and doing may be bridged by investments in human capital -colleagues and students- to develop their native capacities for entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation. As educator, he actively promotes these practices and generously offers guidance, knowledge and expertise, so that students may develop and improve upon these. He is committed to teach with clarity, passion, curiosity and motivation, to support the values and responsibilities of a profession that will define our world and the way we will live tomorrow. In this perspective, information metabolized into knowledge and technological innovations become fundamental to build awareness and expertise, envisioning and experimenting with what is new, to conquer inevitable challenges and to learn from occasional defeats, all while maintaining shared, collaborative alliances within and across disciplinary boundaries and dimensional scales
