While working as an employee in the fast-food industry, Mrs. Garrett faced the challenge of finding reliable childcare services for her daughter. After a friend of hers purchased a childcare center along with his mother, she subsequently found the childcare she needed along with the opportunity to switch career fields. Despite having no prior educational experience in childcare, Mrs. Garrett secured employment as a teacher's aide, drawing on the knowledge she gleaned from being a mother, and developed further skills.
After collaborating with an individual in a business venture that established the Active Learning Center in 1994, Mrs. Garrett acquired the rights to the center's name three years later and continued to expand its operations. Mrs. Garrett has now turned the business into a family owned and operated business where her husband of 31 years, and her son who is 27, are actively involved in the day-to-day operations. Her daughter, 30, also helps in the administration part of the business. She is now the owner of Active Learning Center 6, Active Learning Center 7, Active Learning Center 8, and now Active Learning Center 9. She holds membership with the Childcare Association and has maintained her commitment to establishing herself and her centers. In all she has and will continue to work towards, Mrs. Garrett lives by the motto, "Live life to the fullest." Although she has since reduced her direct business involvement, she still remains actively engaged in the critical business operations and regularly visits all her facilities to provide support, resources, and guidance and to ensure her company's mission statement—which vows to "provide a loving space and healthy environment for all children" and "ensure a positive or rewarding experience for all staff"—is being upheld. Outside of her business venture, Mrs. Garrett prioritizes giving back to her local community, specifically local firefighting and police departments during their annual drives for children. She also devotes her time to caring for her own family and provides consultancy services to other childcare centers where she has a rapport with the owners.
