Omkar R. Sunkersett Recognized by Marquis Who's Who

Mr. Omkar Sunkersett is making a name for himself as a data engineering leader in the cloud services sector

For nearly five years, Mr. Sunkersett has worked as a data engineer at Amazon.com Inc., where he has led the search and science data infrastructure and analytics practice to help customers make better buying decisions using visual search and augmented reality. Before search, he led the digital, device and Alexa technology team to launch its data warehousing capabilities to streamline the operational analytics of bestselling products such as Amazon Alexa, echo, fire TV, fire tablet and kindle. Prior to Alexa, he worked with Amazon Web Services, helping high-tech clients develop big data solutions using the world's finest cloud services, in which he earned seven specialty certificates of expertise.

Leading up to his time at Amazon, he studied at the University of Mumbai in India to earn a Bachelor of Engineering in information technology and became an IBM academic associate prior to graduating in 2012. After earning his bachelor's degree with first class, Mr. Sunkersett volunteered as a part-time music and math tutor in local schools for three years, while working as a full-time database engineering consultant at Capgemini for almost four years.

At Capgemini, Mr. Sunkersett managed one of the world's most sustainable data centers, located in the United Kingdom, with 97% uptime, gaining a diverse work experience with 18 Fortune-500 clients from 15 industries across 10 countries, mostly based in Europe, where he planned and executed more than 600 mission-critical data center changes with 99% success. During his time there, he earned eight Oracle professional level certifications, including one expert level and three specialist level certifications, along with the prestigious client recognition award in 2014 for a large-scale data migration project from England, which earned him two promotions in two consecutive years. While working at Capgemini, he continued on in his educational pursuits.

Mr. Sunkersett completed the business foundations program through Wharton Online and moved to the United States, where he studied to receive a Master of Science in information science with distinction, with a specialization in data science, in 2018 from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, one of the best public research universities in the world. Whilst working toward his master's degree, he served as the student leader on the class gift committee and as the executive treasurer of the school of information master's association; through his involvement with the University of Michigan, he was an elected leader, representing more than 450 students, managing student organizations, and helping to sponsor and organize events. In addition, he was an active member of the Ann Arbor data dive and the Michigan data science team.

Along with his studies and community involvement at the University of Michigan, Mr. Sunkersett served as a research assistant in the university's school of public health and school for environment and sustainability from 2016-2018; meanwhile, he also worked as a research assistant at the world-renowned Argonne national laboratory in 2017 for his summer internship. In 2018, he continued to play an active part in the research community, working as a research assistant at Yale University, where he developed a price index for an animal program, by identifying more than 7,000 product markers from 13 databases and producing a list of over 2,300 surrogate items from eight baskets of consumables using the HEPI guidelines. Thereafter, he joined the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines for nearly a year in a risk data analytics role.

Along with his current position at Amazon, Mr. Sunkersett applies his engineering expertise in the music sector, working as a freelance music producer, and has continued his involvement with Rotary International, a membership he has held since 2010. In each of the positions he has held, both at Capgemini and Amazon, Mr. Sunkersett has shared his knowledge and contributed to the company's development and success through writing. While at Capgemini, he authored numerous articles related to Oracle infrastructure products, and, at Amazon, he has published work through the Amazon Web Services big data blog, which has helped over a million customers from around the world.

Along with contributing to the AWS big data blog, Mr. Sunkersett is the first author of a novel case study within the blog, which he has led to success. The case, which exemplifies Amazon's leadership principles, resulted in substantial benefits for the customer service team, by lowering the Amazon Redshift costs by up to 55% and by enhancing the overall performance of analytics by up to 47%.
