Dr. Manitius is a seasoned engineer and educator who has been a faculty member at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, since 1988. As a professor of electrical and computer engineering in the department of electrical and computer engineering, he strives to provide students with a vigorous and exciting curriculum. During his distinguished tenure on campus, Dr. Manitius served as a professor and Chair for the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department from 1998 to 2014. He also served as a Chair of the Department of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) from 2016 to 2020. During his terms in leadership positions at George Mason University, he initiated, enhanced or led the creation or substantial enhancement of several degree programs, such as Bioengineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Forensics, Telecommunications and other programs in the College of Engineering and Computing, His efforts contributed to a creation of strong foundation of several academic programs.
Dr. Manitius began teaching in 1961 as an assistant, then associate professor at the Polytechnical School in Warsaw, Poland. He subsequently became a visiting associate professor at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis from 1972 to 1973, a researcher and professor of mathematics at the University of Montreal between 1974 and 1983, and a full professor of mathematics at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, from 1981 to 1988. Besides teaching, Dr. Manitius found success with the National Science Foundation in Washington, beginning as a program director of applied mathematics from 1985 to 1987 and then as the deputy director of the Division of Mathematical Sciences between 1987 and 1988.
Aside from his teaching and field expertise, Dr. Manitius was active on the grant selection committee of pure and applied mathematics for the National Science and Engineering Research Council in Ottawa, Canada, from 1979 to 1982. As a respected researcher and scholar, he remains interested in the mathematical areas of control theory. Dr. Manitius has notably authored circa 80 professional papers and several book chapters, co-authored "Principles of Automation" in 1974, and was the associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control and SIAM Review.
Dr. Manitius graduated from high school in Cracow, Poland. He continued his studies, achieving a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering at the Academy of Mining and Metallurgy (AGH) in 1960 and a Doctor of Philosophy from the Polytechnic Institute in Warsaw in 1968. His research work at that stage of his career was recognized with a Polish Academy of Sciences Prize in 1972.
As a part of his professional commitments, Dr. Manitius has remained a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the American Mathematics Society, and the International Neural Network Society.
Dr. Manitius received an Outstanding Performance and Sustained Superior Performance Award from National Science Foundation in December 1987. He received the First Citation for Public Service from American Mathematical Society in 1991. The Citation is for the contributions he made to the mathematical community while employed in the Division of Mathematical Sciences at the National Science Foundation.
Dr. Manitius received the coveted David King Award from George Mason University in 2022 for his contributions to developing multiple educational programs on campus. The citation states that the award is "for your years of outstanding contributions to enhancing teaching and learning at George Mason University".
Aside from his work in the academic discipline of electrical engineering, Dr. Manitius wrote a book in Polish, a biography of Pastor Gustaw Manitius (1880-1940), who was a martyr of a Nazi concentration camp in Poland, in 1940. Pastor Gustaw Manitius is recognized by a city park bearing his name and a monument in Poznań, Poland. The book was published in Poland in 2015.
