Ms. Sluzalis is a disability rights activist and disaster relief first responder who has been the co-executive director at The Partnership for Inclusive Disaster Strategies since 2019. Experienced in community organizing and engagement, she focuses on ensuring that the needs of disaster survivors and individuals with disabilities in crises are met.
Since taking on her position, Ms. Sluzalis inherited an organization that was barely funded and had less than $10,000 in the bank. Working alongside her life partner Germán Parodi, she has strengthened and built the organization into a thriving nonprofit with a $600,000 annual budget. Additionally, The Partnership for Inclusive Disaster Strategies has since begun supporting a Ukrainian-based organization led by women with disabilities that are meeting the needs of people with disabilities throughout the invasion of Ukraine.
Ms. Sluzalis formerly served as her organization's national disability-inclusive emergency management leader and disaster response team lead. She also held various roles with National ADAPT and PA ADAPT, becoming a staunch disability rights activist and disaster relief first responder. While Shaylin has her own invisible disabilities, her involvement in the disability rights field began thanks to the influence of her disabled sister, Brittani. Eager to continue her excellent work, Ms. Sluzalis aims to expand her nonprofit's capabilities to unite people and focus on the rights, needs, and inclusion of people with disabilities. She is also excited for her work to be highlighted in a chapter of a book on disaster risk reduction for individuals with disabilities.
Among her many accomplishments in the industry, Ms. Sluzalis was instrumental in establishing the Real Emergency Access for Aging and Disability Inclusion for Disasters Act and the Disaster Relief Medicaid Act. As a leader in her community, she and Mr. Parodi deployed to Puerto Rico to facilitate a network of disability organizations and provide direct support to disaster survivors with disabilities, in collaboration with the local Center for Independent Living to advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities. On a global scale, in 2019, Ms. Sluzalis became involved with the United Nations Thematic Group on Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Action, established under the Stakeholder Group of Persons with Disabilities, to support the engagement of persons with disabilities, their representative organizations, and other relevant stakeholders. Additionally, Ms. Sluzalis became a board member for Liberty Resources Inc. in 2020 and a youth seat board member for the Association of Programs for Rural Independent Living in 2022.
Ms. Sluzalis holds a Bachelor of Business Administration and Management from Pennsylvania College of Technology since 2018. She attributes her success to those she surrounds herself with, most notably her disabled friends and colleagues who work together to ensure no one is left behind.
