She also interacts directly with the soldiers, including educating them and learning more about their lives to help them change any behaviors to improve their health. Additionally, she lends her expertise to the board of directors of the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition and is a valued member of the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science.
Among her professional accomplishments, Dr. McCarthy was honored with a Scientific Mentorship Award from the Triservice Nursing Research Program, a federal fund for nursing science, and was named Geneva Researcher of the Year in 2018. She was also admitted as a fellow to the American Academy of Nursing in 2016 and to the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition in 2019.
To prepare for her professional journey, Dr. McCarthy earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from D'Youville University in 1980 and a Master's degree in physiological nursing from the University of Washington School of Nursing in 1989. Following these achievements, she attained a Doctor of Philosophy in nursing science from the University of Washington School of Nursing in 2006. Eminently qualified in her field, she is a certified nutrition support clinician by the National Board for Nutrition Support Certification.
Within the coming years, Dr. McCarthy intends to remain updated on the most cutting-edge topics in science that need investigation. Passionate about the field of health promotion for military service members, she is determined to continue working on large research projects to improve their care.
