A seasoned cybersecurity expert with years of expertise in the field of education, Dr. Hawthorne presently serves as a faculty member specializing in cybersecurity and computer science at Rider University. Prior to obtaining her current role as the Graduate Program Director for Cybersecurity, she taught the same subjects as a tenured Senior Professor at Union College of Union County, NJ and worked as a cybersecurity education consultant for the National CyberWatch Center at Prince George's Community College, MD. During the early stages of her career, Dr. Hawthorne gained valuable expertise in the field at Lehigh Carbon Community College, PA and the University of Maryland.
Before embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Hawthorne earned a bachelor's degree in decision science and computers, as well as management science from Rider University. Subsequently, she expanded upon her considerable knowledge by earning a master's degree in management information systems from Kean University and a PhD in computer and information systems from Nova Southeastern University, where she published her thesis, "Chiro-Informatics: Towards a Semantic Web Health Record and Ontology for Coordination of Patient Information Between Chiropractic and Allopathic Physicians." After completing her PhD, she also pursued postgraduate studies in cyber investigations and digital forensics at the University of Maryland University College, and was one of ten faculty selected to participate in a cybersecurity research project at the Polytechnic Institute of New York University (NYU-Poly).
Driven to remain abreast of changes in the dynamic cybersecurity field, Dr. Hawthorne aligns herself with the Association for Computing Machinery, through which she was named a Distinguished Educator and co-Chair of the Education Board. Due to her outstanding breadth of knowledge, she has served as a principal investigator for various research initiatives funded by the National Science Foundation. Additionally, she authored or co-authored more than 100 publications, including "Creating 2+2 Education Pathways in Cybersecurity" and "Information Assurance Education in Two- and Four-year Institutions."
