Dr. Bochkay is an experienced educator and academic advisor who joined the University of Miami (UM) in 2014 as an assistant professor. Promoted to associate professor in 2021 at the Miami Herbert Business School, she teaches advanced managerial accounting and financial accounting in the undergraduate and graduate programs. Additionally, Dr. Bochkay became an academic advisor for the technical staff at the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) Foundation, a nonprofit, international public interest organization that focuses on developing high-quality global accounting and sustainability standards, in 2023. In this capacity, she plays a critical role in aiding the analysis of public comment letters, reporting trends and economic effects of proposed and recently issued standards, which is essential in setting reporting standards and guidelines.
Remaining relevant in her industry, Dr. Bochkay attends and presents at local, national, and international professional conferences and workshops. A well-written author, she has also authored and co-authored many professional papers since 2010 in such professional publications as the Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting Research, Contemporary Accounting Research, Journal of Accounting, Auditing, and Finance, and Foundations and Trends® in Accounting. Attributing to her success, Dr. Bochkay has been responsible for developing automated methods to deal with textual data. She notably established algorithms that automatically sift through hundreds of thousands of financial reports and extract useful information from textual disclosures.
Before joining UM, Dr. Bochkay taught courses in the business school at her alma mater, Rutgers University, as a course instructor from 2011 to 2014. She attributes her success to her humble beginnings in Ukraine and taking advantage of the opportunity to migrate to the U.S. Looking toward the future, Dr. Bochkay plans to remain steadfast regarding her work with the IFRS Foundation and is hopeful that the sustainability reporting taking place will be palpable in the coming years.
To achieve her professional goals, Dr. Bochkay received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a Master of Science in Statistics from Ivan Franko National University in Lviv, Ukraine, in 2008 and 2009, respectively. She also received a Doctor of Philosophy in Accounting from Rutgers University in 2014.
Remaining aware of developments in her field, Dr. Bochkay is a member of the American Accounting Association. She has also been recognized for her hard work with several teaching awards, including an Accounting Faculty of the Year Award, and numerous Discussion Paper Awards and Outstanding Reviewer Awards for journal publications.
