Brenda Louw, DPhil, has been Inducted into the Prestigious Marquis Who's Who Biographical Registry

    JOHNSON CITY, TN, January 18, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Brenda Louw, DPhil, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Leveraging more than four decades of excellence in speech-language pathology, Dr. Louw has earned distinction as a professor emeritus for East Tennessee State University as well as for the University of Pretoria. Having been a professor at ETSU since 2009, she has focused her efforts on teaching courses within the department of audiology and speech-language pathology at the College of Clinical and Rehabilitative Health Sciences in 2023 before her retirement. These include teaching students about speech-language issues related to cleft lip and palate and craniofacial differences, along with other communication disorders. She also engages in research in Neonatal Opioid Syndrome, leadership in speech-language pathology and culturally responsive care. Additionally, she is a valued member of the American Cleft Palate Craniofacial Association.

Previously, Dr. Louw served as a speech-language therapist and audiologist for the University of Pretoria's department of speech pathology and audiology in 1977 and became a lecturer there in 1979. She subsequently was the lead speech-language pathologist for the university's Cleft Facial Deformity Clinic from 1986 to 2009. During this period, she also was a senior lecturer for the department of speech pathology and audiology from 1988 until 1992 and an associate professor from 1993 until 1996. She also served as the head of the Clinic for High Risk Babies of the Centre for Early Intervention in Communication Pathology in 1996 in addition to being a professor for the University of Pretoria in 1997.

Dr. Louw served as the director for the University of Pretoria's Centre for Early Intervention in Communication Pathology in 1998, and as head of the department of speech-language pathology at the University of Pretoria in in South Africa from 2003 until 2009 and earning emerita status in 2009. Over the course of her career, she has contributed a wealth of research to her field, including authoring more than 90 publications in peer-reviewed journals, with her research centered on assessment and treatment for individuals with cleft lip palate, multicultural issues and cultural competence, and communication disorders associated with HIV/AIDS. Among her professional accomplishments, she was honored with a Mentorship Award from East Tennessee State University for her stellar work. She also was admitted as a fellow to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association as well as to the South African Speech-Language Hearing Association.

Before embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Louw earned a Bachelor of Arts in Logopedics from the University of Pretoria in 1975. Following this achievement, she attained a Master of Science in speech-language pathology from the University of Alabama in 1978. She subsequently gained a Doctor of Philosophy in speech-language pathology from the University of Pretoria in 1988. Added to these, she holds a diploma in tertiary education from the same institution.

Within the coming years, Dr. Louw intends to continue sharing her expertise through mentoring past students, conducting research and collaborating with colleagues, as well as providing service to the speech-language pathology profession. She is presently engaged in projects researching the application of the ICF-framework in academic preparation of speech-language pathologists, in person centered care for individuals with cleft lip and palate, and on neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome.
