To prepare for his professional journey, Mr. McCanney earned a Bachelor of Arts double major in physics and mathematics from Saint Mary's University of Minnesota in 1970. Following this achievement, he attained a master's degree in nuclear and solid-state physics from Tulane University in 1975. Notably, while he was on the faculty of Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, he discovered that the solar wind has a charged separation, which creates a large capacitor in the solar system. This capacitor drives various weather conditions and interactions between planets and affects human psyches, redefining how scientists understand the solar system's formation by way of his theory "Plasma Discharge Comet Model".
