Dr. Abubakar is a diversified expert in his field who has been affiliated with Villanova University as an adjunct professor and chief sustainability officer since 2021 and 2023, respectively. Since joining the institution, he has been responsible for implementing a 10-year plan for Villanova University to achieve carbon neutrality and net zero for operations, curriculum, and sustainable living. The plan notably includes programs for students, faculty, and staff, resource sharing, paperless operations, and a plastic-free campus, among other objectives.
Besides his academic endeavors, Dr. Abubakar has been the president of the Center for Carbon Literacy and Sustainable Education Initiative since 2023, a Nigerian organization where he works remotely. Best known for his contributions to making a positive impact on the lives of others through his work and actions, he looks forward to future success. Among various goals, Dr. Abubakar aims to complete several books he is working on regarding sustainability.
During an earlier stage of his career, Dr. Abubakar was a lecturer at SAMS from 2006 to 2015 and at the Institute for Formators between 2015 and 2022. He was also a prior provincial on behalf of the Order of Saint Augustine from 2012 to 2020, managing the Nigerian Augustinian Province with communities in Nigeria, Benin Republic, South Africa, the U.K., and Italy, and establishing several schools to reduce the number of children not attending schools. Among other career-related accomplishments, Dr. Abubakar has served as a keynote speaker and will be speaking again in Washington in February 2024.
As a dedicated civil leader, Dr. Abubakar has been an academic staff member for the African Circular Economy Network and a judge for the Global Undergraduate Awards since 2022. He has also served on the board of the Celestial Wellness Foundation since 2020.
Possessing a rich education, Dr. Abubakar holds a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from Pontifical Urbaniana University since 1999 and a second Bachelor of Arts in theology and theological studies from the University of Jos since 2004. He subsequently received four master's degrees from various institutions between 2012 and 2021 in theological studies, educational leadership, business administration and human resource administration, and international development. Dr. Abubakar continued his studies, completing executive education in circular economy and sustainability strategies from the University of Cambridge and in leading sustainable corporations from the University of Oxford in 2022, followed by a Doctor of Business Administration in global business and leadership from California Intercontinental University in 2021 and a Doctor of Philosophy in sustainable architecture-built environment from De Montfort University in 2022.
Besides his degrees, Dr. Abubakar attained numerous professional credentials in sustainability, sustainable finance, and other areas. He also became a chartered manager through the Chartered Manager Institute and a certified leadership coach through the John Maxwell Team. Continually committed to his work, Dr. Abubakar is a member of the International Society of Sustainability Professionals, the International Studies Association, the Development Studies Association, the Chartered Institute of Administration in Nigeria, and the Chartered Management Institute in the U.K. Additionally, he is an elected fellow of the International Society for Development and Sustainability and a member of the advisory council for the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability of Higher Education.
Dr. Abubakar has been recognized for his success with an Award of Excellence for Contribution to Education in 2019. His success can be attributed to his strong desire to make a difference and his fulfillment in helping others.
