He was provided with experience in neurosurgery, infectious disease and dermatology at the Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. He was also detailed to NASA to assist in establishing medical aid stations for the more than 250,000 spectators present for the first eight space shuttle landings at Edwards Air Force Base. President Ronald Reagan was present for one of the landings and required special contingency plans in the event of an emergency.
Among his professional accomplishments, Mr. Herndon was honored with an Excellence in Nursing Award by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs in 2019. In 2024 his fifty-two years of government service was recognized in an article featured on the VA Insider website. He was also invited as a motivational speaker at a healthcare operations center briefing from Washington, D.C. this January. A humble person by nature, he consistently approaches his work with dedication and fulfills his responsibilities to make a positive impact on his community. He intends to continue his work for the foreseeable future.
