LONG BEACH, CA, March 01, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Arthur F. Gelb, MD, FACP, FCCP, ATSF, FAAAAI, pulmonologist with Lakewood Regional Medical Center in Lakewood, California, and Memorial Hospital in Long Beach, California, was selected by Marquis Who's Who for a prominent feature in the West Los Angeles regional edition of The New Yorker.

Deeply committed to the edification of his students and colleagues and the treatment of his patients, Arthur F. Gelb, MD, has earned acclaim through his multifaceted roles in medicine. In addition to his work in practice, through which he serves as a pulmonologist, he maintains affiliation with the Lakewood Regional Medical Center, where he assists in managing the intensive care unit.

Outside of his endeavors in direct care, Dr. Gelb has served as a clinical professor of medicine at the Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California Los Angeles Medical Center since 1974. In this role, his research centers on the mechanisms that underlay various respiratory diseases. On this and other subjects, he has written or contributed to more than 130 research articles, many of which have appeared in such scientific journals as Pediatric Research, the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice, the Annals of Allergy Asthma & Immunology, the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases Journal, the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, CHEST, and the Journal of Breath Research, among many others. Likewise, Dr. Gelb has served as a reviewer for various publications and sat on the editorial board of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology from 2016 to 2021.

To remain aware of developments affecting his field of focus, Dr. Gelb has maintained alignment with a number of pertinent organizations, including the American College of Physicians, the American College of Chest Physicians, and the European Respiratory Society, with additional fellowships in the American Thoracic Society and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. He was also an American delegate to the European Respiratory Society from 2012 to 2015 and has taught at multiple universities worldwide as a visiting professor.

Dr. Gelb attributes much of his success to his propensity for hard work and his simple desire to avail himself on behalf of others. While his career has been filled with many highlights, he is most proud to have assisted a large number of patients, regardless of their ability to pay for services rendered. Likewise, Dr. Gelb is proud to have played an instrumental role in training the next generation of doctors. He is especially grateful for the ongoing support he has always received from his parents, Bertha and Irving; his sister, SueAnn Grosberg; his children, Nina, Alison Pincus, and Lauren Weisbarth; and his grandchildren, Zew and Marli Weisbarth and Georgia, Carmen, and Wyatt Pincus.

Dr. Gelb earned a Bachelor of Arts from Vanderbilt University, after which he received a Doctor of Medicine from St. Louis University, mentored by Raymond Slavin, MD. He completed a residency in internal and pulmonary medicine at the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center and Kings County Hospital Center, where he rose to become chief resident of pulmonary diseases under Professor Harold Lyons. Later, Dr. Gelb undertook a National Institutes of Health-supported pulmonary fellowship at the Cardiovascular Research Institute at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center under Professor Jay A. Nadel, MD. He also studied with the late Pulmonary Professor Noe Zamel, MD, at the University of Toronto Medical Center. Dr. Gelb considers doctors Nadel and Zamel lifelong mentors.

Dr. Gelb has held numerous fellowships with the American College of Physicians, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAAI), and the American Thoracic Society, which recognized him among its Top 180 Scientists in 2018.
