Marquis Who's Who Honors Alton Perry for Success in Environmental Conservation

Mr. Perry has received several accolades, including a Partnership Award from the North Carolina Natural Resources Conservation Service in 2020 and a Forest Conservationist of the Year Award in 2022.

    WENDELL, NC, March 18, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Alton Perry has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Mr. Perry serves as the director of the Sustainable Forestry and Land Retention Project at Roanoke Cooperative, a role he has held since 2018. In this capacity, he oversees a team dedicated to supporting African American forest landowners in their efforts to retain land and build family wealth through sustainable forestry practices. Prior to his current position, Mr. Perry was a management consultant with Roanoke Cooperative beginning in 2013, where he provided outreach and technical assistance to forest landowners.

Roanoke Cooperative is a rural electric cooperative and is one of the 26 cooperatives in North Carolina that provides electricity to its member-owners. One of its subsidiaries, Roanoke Economic Development Inc., a nonprofit organization, is involved in community-based programs, including the Sustainable Forestry and Land Retention Project.

Before joining Roanoke Cooperative, Mr. Perry had a distinguished career with the North Carolina Forest Service (NCFS), serving in various capacities over three decades. From 2006 to 2012, he was an outreach coordinator, focusing on community engagement and education regarding forestry conservation. He also held the position of Wake County ranger between 1996 and 2006 and assistant ranger from 1983 to 1996. Mr. Perry began his tenure at NCFS as a southern pine beetle technician in 1982, shortly after completing his education.

Building upon his extensive experience in forestry management and conservation, Mr. Perry has been instrumental in forming partnerships between landowners and agencies to promote land retention and sustainable practices. His efforts have helped individual landowners thrive and contribute to broader environmental and economic benefits within the community.

Active civically, Mr. Perry is a member who has served on the board of directors of the North Carolina Tree Farm since 2021. He is also a member, former board member, and former land protection chair of the Conservation Trust for North Carolina. Furthermore, Mr. Perry is a member of a coalition group that advocates for conservation and environmental law.

Mr. Perry's educational background includes an Associate of Science in forest technology from Wayne Community College in 1982. Years later, he received credentials as a certified arborist in 2008. Mr. Perry remains abreast in his industry as a member of the Sustainable Forestry and African American Land Retention Network.

In recognition of his contributions to forestry conservation, Mr. Perry has received several accolades, including a Partnership Award from the North Carolina Natural Resources Conservation Service in 2020 and a Forest Conservationist of the Year Award in 2022. He was also featured in the August 2022 edition of the Daily Herald and showcased in "Black Faces in Green Spaces: The Journeys of Black Professionals in Green Careers" via the Sustainable Forestry Initiative as one of 22 individuals to be interviewed and included in the text. Moreover, through several presentations, Mr. Perry has shared his expertise that underscores the importance of land conservation and sustainable forestry practices. He also created a YouTube video called "Forest Champion: Alton Perry | Keeping Forests."
