ALBUQUERQUE, NM, March 21, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Joseph G. R. Martinez is a distinguished biographee of Marquis Who's Who. He was recently spotlighted in New York City's Times Square on a 22-story screen that is passed by an estimated 1.5 million people daily. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are chosen from among a pool of the most prominent professionals and are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

In 2012, Dr. Martinez retired from an appointment as a regents professor at the University of New Mexico College of Education, where he had served students in the College of Education with unwavering dedication since 1986. Extensive experience as an educator accompanied him in that role, including a position as mathematics instructor at the University of New Mexico-Valencia, where he taught calculus from 1985 to 1986, and as a professor and Chair of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Albuquerque from 1982 to 1985.

Dr. Martinez also boasts exceptional academic training and achievements, having completed a bachelor's degree in psychology, with a minor in English, at the University of New Mexico in 1973. In 1974, he was granted a graduate teaching assistantship at the University of New Mexico, where he earned a PhD and a nomination for the prestigious Popejoy Dissertation Prize in 1980. Notably, Dr. Martinez accumulated additional teaching experience with concurrent positions at the rank of instructor for National College – Albuquerque Extension from 1976 to 1982 and lecturer at the University of New Mexico from 1978 to 1982.

A distinguished scholar, Dr. Martinez has many publications to his credit, including pieces he co-authored such as "Maintaining Standards Without Limiting Access: A Model for Success in the Multicultural Writing Classroom" and "Creating Authentic Learning Environments for College-Level Courses in Writing and Teaching Mathematics"; both were published by Sharing Practices That Work in 2011. From 2019 to 2021, Dr. Martinez was also a partner on disseminating The Narrow Way Series.

Through varied channels, Dr. Martinez has identified ways to give back, including a four-year enlistment in the United States Marine Corps from 1964 to 1968. He was nominated for the highest honor within the Marine Corp, second only to the Medal of Honor: Marine of the Year, during his fourth year on active duty. He refused the honor based on his belief that this honor should go to a Marine who experienced actual combat with the enemy—even if awarded posthumously.

Dr. Martinez also accepted a seat on the editorial board of the Journal of College Reading and Learning from 1984 to 1989. He made meaningful contributions as a media correspondent with The College Mathematics Journals from 1999 to 2000, and Dr. Martinez currently serves as a manuscript reviewer for Mathematics Teacher and as a referee and reviewer for Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School.

Numerous accolades have marked the milestones of Dr. Martinez's unique accomplishments and include a nomination for Outstanding Teacher of the Year at the University of New Mexico in 2010. He also humbly accepted a Certificate of Recognition from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in 1998. Media outlets have also profiled Dr. Martinez, and he was gratified to have been featured in illustrious publications including Forbes Magazine, Fortune National, Wired Magazine and New Yorker Magazine.

Dr. Martinez counts his doctoral dissertation as his most notable professional accomplishment, and through that dedicated research project, he measured perception and conception in speed readers. He attributes his success to a faith in God and to his late wife, Nancy, whom he calls his hero, as well as a persistence to see every project through to a positive outcome. Dr. Martinez remains active in the research context with nine current book projects; he looks forward to having a piece published in the arena of theological analysis and the ontological relationship between God and humans.
