Through varied channels, Dr. Martinez has identified ways to give back, including a four-year enlistment in the United States Marine Corps from 1964 to 1968. He was nominated for the highest honor within the Marine Corp, second only to the Medal of Honor: Marine of the Year, during his fourth year on active duty. He refused the honor based on his belief that this honor should go to a Marine who experienced actual combat with the enemy—even if awarded posthumously.
Dr. Martinez also accepted a seat on the editorial board of the Journal of College Reading and Learning from 1984 to 1989.
