Stephanie E. August, PhD Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Higher Education

Dr. Stephanie E. August lends years of expertise to her work with AI and Computer Science Education



She reviews for a number of computer science, engineering, and artificial intelligence journals.

    LOS ANGELES, CA, April 02, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Stephanie August has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Dr. Stephanie E. August is a jubilee computer scientist with expertise in artificial intelligence and innovative learning environments, and a proven track record of success. She has served as a computer science professor and researcher at Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles as a computer science professor, graduate director, and Special Assistant to the Chief Academic Officer for Graduate Education. At LMU she taught graduate and undergraduate courses in computer science and artificial intelligence, co-developed interdisciplinary courses with English and animation colleagues, and won two NSF grants related to interactive learning environments. Stephanie has also served as Visiting Professor of Engineering Education at California State University, Los Angeles College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology, where she supported the development of educational ecosystems. As a program director with the National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Undergraduate Education she supported several undergraduate programs for computer science and data science as well as the Future of Work at the Human-Technology Frontier program. During the early stages of her career, Dr. August gained valuable expertise in engineering and program management with Hughes Aircraft Company.

Over the years, Dr. August has leveraged her expertise as an editor for the American Association for the Advancement of Science Disruptor Blog promoting research on inclusive STEM ecosystems and as a proposal reviewer for the National Science Foundation. Likewise, she has served as chair of the External Advisory Board for the TILOS AI Institute at the University of California, San Diego, on the advisory board of an NSF Project in Florida and the Computer Science Department at San Francisco State University, and on the steering committee for the NSF Workshop on Expanding Capacity and Diversity in AI Education. She reviews for a number of computer science, engineering, and artificial intelligence journals and serves on program committees for the AAAI Educational Advances in Artificial Intelligence Symposium and other computer science symposia.

Before embarking on her professional journey, Dr. August earned a Bachelor of Arts in Slavic Languages and gained proficiency in Russian, through the University of California, Los Angeles. Subsequently, she earned a Master of Science and PhD in Computer Science from her alma mater. She continues to further her language studies in French, German, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Arabic. Driven to remain abreast of industry changes, Dr. August aligns herself with the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, the IEEE Computer Society, the Association for Computing Machinery, and the American Society of Engineering Education.

In addition to her continuing professional service, Dr. August has contributed to her community through leadership positions in Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, AYSO Soccer, and Sunday school. While her career has been filled with highlights, she is most proud of her tenure as a program director of the National Science Foundation, where she was highly regarded for her analytical and problem-solving skills and her success in blending her career with raising five successful children. Though hard work and dedication have brought her far in her career, she credits her success to guidance from mentors, perseverance, and creativity. Within the coming years, Dr. August intends to experience the continued success of her career while pursuing her personal goal of visiting every continent and every national park in the United States.
