Born in Fort Eustis, Virginia and raised in Memphis, TN where she attended Melrose High School.
Upon retiring in 2011, Dr. Shotwell fostered her passion for the arts, becoming an author, poet, screenwriter, and playwright. Over the last 10-plus years, she has written and published six books, including "Family and Faith: Poetry," "Maggie: Never Bitter," "Middle Child Short Stories Untold: Annie's Diary Series," the best-selling textbook, "Professional Development for Pre-Professionals: For all Majors and Careers," and was interviewed on several radio and podcast shows. "Middle Child 2: Better than Good" and "Middle Child: Build a Fence All Around Me." Likewise, she turned "Maggie: Never Bitter" into a screenplay for which she wrote 16 songs and received several awards for Best Musical Screenplay. Alongside her work as a screenwriter, playwright, and author, Dr. Shotwell is the founder and president of a school called the Business of Arts Academy International, which caters to 7th through 12th-grade students.
Between 1993 and 2011, Dr. Shotwell excelled as a professor at Florida A&M University, where she taught business and educational leadership. As a professor and department chair, she also served on numerous university committees, performed with its dance company, and served on community boards, such as the MLK Foundation of Florida and the Tallahassee Airport Advisory Board. During the early stages of her career, Dr. Shotwell also gained valuable expertise in education as a professor at the local community colleges, universities, and as an accountant in San Francisco.
Dr. Shotwell, an expert in her field, earned a Bachelor of Science in accounting from Golden Gate University in 1977 and an MBA in international business from her alma mater in 1979. Subsequently, she received an Ed.D. in educational leadership from the University of San Francisco and became a certified aerobic fitness instructor through the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America. As a fitness instructor, Dr. Shotwell taught dance fitness classes at local gyms, churches, schools, centers, and abroad.
Given her professional achievements, Dr. Shotwell received several awards for "Maggie: Never Bitter," including the Oxford Script Award, the Best Script Award, and the Best Screen Award from the International Family Film Festival. Additionally, she won the Family in Film Award through the Faith & Film Festival, a Best Song and Vocalist Award from Saint Martin, the Teacher of the Year Award from Florida A&M University, and the Memphis Living Legend Award, which was the highlight of her career. Though hard work and dedication have brought her far in her career, she credits her success to her unwavering faith in God and the guidance and support of others. Looking toward the future, Dr. Shotwell aims to take "Maggie: Never Bitter" on a worldwide tour.
Dr. Shotwell has one child and two grandchildren where she resides in Tallahassee, FL.
