Prior to joining academia, she served as a Resident Engineer at Palo Alto Networks, as a Prisma Cloud Consultant at Dell, and as a Cloud Security Engineer at Farmers Insurance. She has also served as a reviewer and committee member for the National Science Foundation (NSF), IEEE conferences and journals, the Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC), Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS), and other prestigious national and international venues. Earlier in her career, she was a Lecturer at Shaqra University in her home country of Saudi Arabia and directed the Electronic Media Department at the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Civil Service. She began her professional journey as a Programmer at Princess Nourah Bint Abdulrahman University. As such, Dr. Alharthi has a unique and valuable perspective on cybersecurity, having gained extensive experience in both industry and academia.
Dr. Alharthi's achievements include the Research Leadership Institute (RLI) Fellowship from The University pf Arizona's Research, Impact, and Innovation (RII) Office and the Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation (DTEI) Fellowship from the University of California, Irvine. She is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and is affiliated with the Cloud Security Alliance (CSA), the Cloud Computing Association (CCA), the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP), and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). These memberships have played an integral role in her career development and professional networking.
Building upon her extensive experience, Dr. Alharthi earned her Doctorate and a Master of Science, both in computer science, from the University of California, Irvine, in 2021 and 2018, respectively. Her educational background is further solidified by a Master of Public Administration from King Saud University in Saudi Arabia and a Bachelor of Science in computer science from Princess Nourah Bint Abdulrahman University. With this diverse educational background in computer science and public administration, Dr. Alharthi brings a multifaceted approach to the field that allows her to see cybersecurity from both a managerial and technical standpoint, contributing to the high quality of her work.
To remain at the forefront of a constantly changing profession, Dr. Alharthi is continually advancing her knowledge of the information technology field. Her numerous certifications include CompTIA Security+, Amazon Web Service (AWS) Certified Solutions Architect, and Entelligence Certified IT Professional in addition to bootcamps such as the AWS Cloud Technical Essentials Bootcamp by Amazon, Prisma Cloud Engineering Bootcamp by Palo Alto Networks, and Cybersecurity Bootcamp by the University of California, Irvine.
Dr. Alharthi's extracurricular involvement includes mentoring roles with Women Cybersecurity (WiCyS) and Women in Science and Engineering (WISE). After co-founding the Women in Cybersecurity student chapter at the University of California, Irvine, she served as vice president of WiCyS Farmers Insurance Affiliate. Dr. Alharthi has also dedicated her expertise to mentoring students at various levels—including undergraduate, graduate, and K-12—through diverse programs, and she extends her mentorship to peer faculty.
Dr. Alharthi's accolades include several awards, including the 2023 Cybersecurity Focus Area Distinguished Paper Award at the Information Systems & Computing Academic Professionals/Education Special Interest Group (ISCAP-EDSIG) Conference and the 2022-2023 Outstanding Faculty Award at the University of Arizona, and being spotlighted for exceptional contributions to the cybersecurity community at the WiCyS 2024 opening remarks. She is also an accomplished author and presenter with publications in respected journals and a presence at leading international conferences.
