George Gordon Chang Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Architecture

George Gordon Chang lends years of expertise to his work in architecture, conceptual design and planning

A distinguished architectural and interior designer, conceptual design and planning consultant, and development strategist, Mr. Chang has accrued more than 40 years of excellence in his profession. Since 1986, he has served as the owner of an architectural strategic consulting firm in New York, where he helps developers enhance and redevelop properties to improve economic performance and sustainability. His approach, which involves liaising with corporations and manufacturers to create effective marketing strategies to optimize sales, offers strategic consulting services in new development concepts, design and planning. Mr. Chang also specializes in tenant market research and analysis for international real estate development companies, having most recently focused on residential projects, specifically apartment renovations.

Mr. Chang's journey began in Tokyo, where he earned a bachelor's degree in architecture from the Tokyo Design Academy. Seeking new horizons, he immigrated to the United States to further his academic pursuits, undertaking environmental design coursework at the University of California Berkeley and coursework at the California College of the Arts. Equipped with a multicultural upbringing, his early experiences have allowed him to translate cultures and local traditions into successful international practices. Throughout his career, he has exemplified his expertise in senior interior design and project architect roles with companies such as HOK, The Office of David Elliot Leibowitz in New York, Anshen & Allen, and Wong and Brocchini and Marquis in San Francisco. He impressively worked on the New Orleans Center and Bradley International Airport, as well as the redevelopment of retail spaces at the World Trade Center, San Francisco International Airport's South Terminal, John F. Kennedy International Airport's Terminal 4, the Children's Hospital at Stanford University, and St. Mary's Hospital in Reno, Nevada.

Likewise, Mr. Chang has channeled his expertise in conceptual design and planning to serve as a consultant for design principals and firms to develop preliminary designs and plans. To this end, he has consulted for SOM of New York, Chicago and San Francisco; Esherick, Homsey, Dodge and Davis; Edwin Schlossberg Inc. of New York; and Clark Tribble Harris & Li of New York. Within this body of work, Mr. Chang lent his expertise to the planning concept of Yua-Mei Park in Taiwan, the developmental planning of the Sakai Seaport in Japan, the redevelopment strategy of Madison Square Garden in New York and Monterey Bay Aquarium in California, and the development proposals of the San Francisco Zoo's orangutan exhibit, the NASA Space Center in Florida, and the Immigration Visitor's Center on Ellis Island.

Moreover, Mr. Chang has provided land development ideas and strategies to property developers, corporations, cities, municipal agencies and institutions to devise prospectus and development master plans on national and international scales. Serving as a development strategist to these clients, Mr. Chang offered his knowledge to the development and completion of Leicester Square in London, the Rotterdam Redevelopment Project, and various Disney properties such as Euro Disney, Disney World and the Disney Institute. Furthermore, Mr. Chang collaborated with Merlin International Properties UK Ltd., the Shimizu Corporation in Japan and the MCA Recreational Service Group, among others. Notably, he also created the in-store concept for Estee Lauder and promotional events for BMW, VH1 and the Basketball Hall of Fame.

In a career complemented by significant achievements and milestones, Mr. Chang is particularly proud of working on the development and redevelopment strategy of the following projects: Madison Square Garden in NY, Leicester Square in London, and Clarke Quay Singapore, which turned wasteland into a successful entertainment center. Other achievements include work on the Rotterdam redevelopment strategy, Manchester England redevelopment strategy, and the San Francisco International Airport's south terminal. In the coming years, Mr. Chang endeavors to embark on new ventures within the architecture specialty to make significant contributions to the industry.
