Solution to the Global Obesity Epidemic: Cheap, Easy and Safe

By 2015, the WHO projects 700 million people will be obese. Obesity stresses the world's healthcare system due to health consequences like Type 2 diabetes & colon cancer. A new book, The Pen and Paper Diet, provides an easy, cheap & safe solution for people to maintain a healthy weight.

/24-7PressRelease/ - TUCSON, AZ, June 10, 2008 - The obesity rate for the U.S. adult population is approaching 40% [2005 World Health Organization (WHO) estimates show the U.S. obesity rate at over 36%]. According to the latest WHO projections, more than 80% of the U.S. adult population will be overweight by 2015 (http://www.who.int/topics/obesity/en/).

The WHO projects that over 700 million people worldwide will meet obese criteria by 2015. The two primary causes for the obesity epidemic have been defined as: "a global shift in diet towards increased intake of energy-dense foods" or foods with a lot of calories and "a trend towards decreased physical activity" (http://www.who.int/topics/obesity/en/).

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states there are many health consequences for being overweight like Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and colon cancer (http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/obesity/). With the current deterioration of Healthcare (projected RN shortage of 800,000 by 2020, www.discovernursing.com), stress relief on the system is essential and could be easily provided by the population maintaining a healthy weight.

The Pen and Paper Diet, a new book by Michael Dow, provides an easy, cheap and safe solution for the general public to control their weight. It is based on scientific research and helps people "achieve energy balance," which is the first suggestion made by the WHO to address this epidemic.

"The diet is based on the known fact that the human body requires a specific amount of calories to maintain a certain weight. If a person consumes more calories than are required, then fat is produced and a person's weight increases," says Dow.

Dow used a combination of information from the CDC, The National Academy of Sciences (research on required calories for specific weights within an adult's healthy weight range), and the United States Department of Agriculture (calorie information for the majority of the world's foods and beverages).

"I have had people that are high school dropouts, non-GED, understand the program," says Dow. "Also, a local physician has endorsed the book and has begun selling it at his clinic."

"It may sound unbelievable, but you don't have to eat smaller portions of your favorite foods. If you consume a meal with a lot of calories, another meal will have to contain fewer calories. It's an easy eating plan to maintain your ideal weight for the rest of your life," Dow says.

"This diet does not require you to change your current activity level. This is a diet for individuals that are required to be sedentary due to work and family obligations as well as for Olympians because it helps people maintain an energy balance with their calorie consumption and their specific activity level," Dow says.

"The book provides information that individuals and families can use for lifelong reference. The book is all about putting weight management skills into your hands," says Dow.

An expanded edition is intended for health professionals and has calorie requirement calculations for males and females from the ages of 19 to 84. A spanish translation for the US and a generic international English edition (Metric Edition) have also been published.

The Pen and Paper Diet, $14.95 (expanded edition, $39.95) is available at http://stores.lulu.com/thepenandpaperdiet and will be available in bookstores and other online retailers soon.
