45% of British Columbians oppose bank Mergers (Vancouver, BC, Canada)

A Nordic Research Group poll shows significant opposition to any proposed chartered bank merger.

/24-7PressRelease.com/ - Vancouver, BC, Canada, May 6, 2005 - A Nordic Research Group poll shows significant opposition to any proposed chartered bank merger. 45% of BC residents said they either strongly (27%) or somewhat (18%) opposed the merger of even two of the five main chartered banks.

"Those who oppose charter bank mergers tend to strongly oppose it," commented Adam Di Paula, Senior Vice President of Nordic Research Group. "Right now it isn't on the radar screen for most people. However, any initiative by Ottawa or the banks to move forward with mergers would have to involve a significant amount of public persuasion."

The question asked was: Thinking about the major banks in Canada - that is Scotiabank, RBC, Bank of Montreal, CIBC and TD Canada Trust - would you support or oppose the federal government allowing two of these banks to merge together? 35% of respondents said they either somewhat (27%) or strongly (8%) supported such a move.

About the survey

805 randomly selected BC residents, proportionate to the province's population, were interviewed on the issue of bank mergers as part of Nordic Research Group's monthly omnibus - Ask BC, BC's leading omnibus. Overall results are accurate to within +/- 3.5%, 19 times out of 20 and were collected from April 22 to April 25, 2005.
