Shopping for a Mortgage? Easy-to-Use Mortgage Loan Comparison Worksheet Can Help Avoid Predatory Lending and Foreclosure

The average mortgage borrower only shops for a mortgage once every seven years. The process can be both intimidating and overwhelming. Make a mistake and it can cost the borrower thousands of extra dollars - all in mere seconds. Here are the key questions every mortgage borrower must ask.

HILLIARD, OH, January 24, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Durham (N.C.) based nonprofit Center for Responsible Lending estimated that predatory mortgage lending is costing Americans more than $9.1 billion each year.

Many times borrowers may not even know that they are overpaying by thousands of dollars because they don't write checks for these amounts. The loan officer simply structures the loans so that the costs are built into their mortgages.

Ted Janusz is a former senior loan officer for a regional mortgage bank.

In his position, he would notice most potential customers would ask, "What is your rate?" As long as he could get the customers to continue to focus on the rate, he would be able to charge them exorbitant fees, often without their knowledge.

After he left the industry, he wanted to disclose the tips and tricks that cost his customers thousands of extra dollars, so he wrote the book Kickback: Confessions of a Mortgage Salesman.

In addition, he has now designed a simple Mortgage Loan Comparison Worksheet that has the key questions every borrower must ask their loan officer, so he or she will not be taken to the cleaners on fees.
