A Cafe With A Cause

Cause Cafe Serves Up Coffee, Breakfast, and Lunch While Supporting Families With Special Needs Children

NORTHPORT, NY, July 26, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Stacey Wohl, a mother of two teenagers with Autism has taken the bold step of running two businesses - a full-service eatery offering Our Coffee with a Cause brand coffee, organic breakfast foods, sandwiches, salads, juices and smoothies - and a warehouse for processing, packaging and shipping its own coffee products.

The Cafe employs individuals with cognitive delays who work alongside their typically developing peers. The company also offers private vocational training to developmentally delayed individuals with the objective of providing them with the valuable job experience necessary to finding gainful employment.

"I wanted to give my own children and others with special needs a valuable job experience - the type of experience necessary to finding gainful employment," says Wohl. "The alternative was working in a sheltered workshop. Here at the Cafe, they are a vital and integral part of our operation. We are constantly expanding their responsibilities."

Cody Stillwagon dreamed of cooking, but he was stuck washing dishes. At Cause Cafe, Stillwagon is slicing vegetables and fruits in a professional kitchen, and doing a great job, according to Wohl. Employment opportunities are available for individuals with special needs persons working with job coaches in several departments, including counter help, baristas, cleaning staff, and warehouse staff.

French-themed Cause Cafe opened in May 2016 and serves a full menu of organic breakfast, lunch foods and coffee. Hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The kitchen is staffed by food service professionals working alongside individuals with specials needs. The Cafe also offers clothing and accessories.

Research indicates that out of 1.1 million New York residents with disabilities, only about 351,000 are employed. With future plans to expand and franchise, Wohl is determined to change that number.

Background: Cause Cafe
Our Coffee with a Cause was founded in 2012 to meet the growing needs of special needs individuals on Long Island who seek employment and a learning environment to acquire real-world skills. Cause Cafe opened its doors in May 2016, at 1014 Fort Salonga Road in Northport, NY. The family-owned and operated business provides gainful employment to those who might not otherwise have such an opportunity. A portion of the business proceeds benefit Our Own Place, a non-profit organization founded by Stacey Wohl to provide opportunities for special needs children and their single parents.
