Special Guest: Laurie Vanderboom's professional career has always centered on dynamic issues affecting families and children. In 2007, after many years developing and overseeing successful programs for a family support organization, she moved to the national level as the Director of Programs for the National Eating Disorders Association. In her current position, she is responsible for developing programs that address the support needs of individuals and families affected by eating disorders. She is charged with enriching the information resources available to them and the general public. Her recent projects are the development of several comprehensive on-line Toolkits for Parents, Educators and the soon to be released Coaches Toolkit.
Special Guest: Stephanie Covington Armstrong is a playwright and screenwriter living in Los Angeles. She has written for Essence, Sassy, Mademoiselle and Venice magazines, among other publications. She authored the screenplay for Contradictions of the Heart starring Vanessa Williams, and her plays "Three Stories Down," "The Outside Sisters" and "The Long Journey Home" have been performed in theaters in Los Angeles and New York. In her compelling memoir Not All Black Girls Know How to Eat: A Story of Bulimia (Lawrence Hill Books, August 2009), Armstrong vividly describes her struggle as a black woman with bulimia. This is the first book by and among black women about eating disorders and in it, Armstrong answers many questions about why black women often do not seek traditional therapy for emotional problems.
