/24-7PressRelease/ - NORWICH, CT, April 02, 2008 - Last week Delta Airlines and American Airlines grounded parts of the MD-80 fleet to inspect them. This left many passengers stranded at different hubs across the United States. While the actions of both companies resulted in canceled flights and negative press, they benefited from a quick turn-around and safer operations. This could not be done without an effective document control software solution.

Document control software allows companies like Delta, and American Airlines to locate their inspection documentation in a quick and orderly fashion. Using the software they can locate the planes in need of inspection and ground them. This could be done by having a document controller run a search on all documentation related to the MD-80 aircraft. This search can be a date range, a document type (in the case here, most likely inspection documents), who conducted and/or approved of the inspection, the tail number of the aircraft, parts inspected, and even who scheduled the inspection. Most likely even more criteria were used to help narrow down number and model of planes. The advantage given to the airlines is minimizing the number of planes grounded.

Safety above all else is important to the successful operations of any airline. The attention to detail, the quality of the maintenance, the quality of the inspections, and meticulous record keeping means that the planes stay in the air longer - safer. That in turns means more flights, more seats sold, and profitability to the company. That cannot be obtained without proper document control.

Passengers may gripe about being stranded, but in the back of their minds they understand the need for a safe flight. It is an exceptional effort and a testimony to the modern document control software that has allowed the airlines to quickly asses, inspect, and fix their aircraft for safe operations.
