Amasaka Kakuro Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Kakuro is an accomplished engineer and professor emeritus of the Aoyama Gakuin University, where he taught the art of quality engineering for 16 years. He entered the university after serving with the Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan from 1968 to 2000, accruing 72 patents in production and quality control systems as well as engineering and measurement technology. Today, Toyota is considered one of the most reliable automobile manufacturers in the world, an accolade in part due to Dr. Kakuro's involvement with quality manufacturing for many divisions of the company.

Born in Aomori Prefecture in Japan, Dr. Kakuro attended the Hachinohe National College of Technology and earned a Bachelor's degree in engineering in 1968. That year, he joined the Toyota Motor Corporation and went on to specialize in precision mechanical and system engineering, as well as statistics and quality control. Dr. Kakuro received a doctorate of engineering from Hiroshima University in 1997 on these very subjects. While at Toyota, he served as an engineer and manager with the production engineering division, the quality assurance division, the manufacturing division, and the overseas engineering division. In 1998, he was appointed general manager of the total quality management promotion division. Dr. Kakuro is an expert in the Just in Time and Toyota Production systems.

In 2000, Dr. Kakuro went on to Aoyama Gakuin, where he joined the college of science and engineering and the graduate school of science and engineering. He specialized in production engineering, statistical science, multivariate analysis, reliability engineering, and information processing engineering. Additionally, Dr. Kakuro has been a prolific researcher, and produced numerous articles for industry publications. His work with scientific total quality management, customer science, manufacturing, and product design has been published in numerous mediums.

Dr. Kakuro has been entrusted as the convener of the Journal of Japanese Society for Quality Control, the Japanese Operations Management and Strategy Association, the Production and Operations Management Society, and the European Operations Management Association. From 2003 to 2007, he served as vice chairman of the Japan Society of Production Management, and has headed a number of other societies. Notably, Dr. Kakuro was selected as a member of the Denning Prize judging committee from 2002 to 2013, and in 2008, he was named ambassador of Hachinohe, Japan.

For his invaluable contribution to engineering, manufacturing, and quality control, Dr. Kakuro has received numerous industry accolades, most recently a 2017 Higashi Kuninomiya Commemoration Prize, a 2016 Higashi Kuninomiya Culture Prize, and a 2013 Outstanding Paper Award at the International Conference on Management and Information Systems. Notably, he was honored with a 1991 Aichi Invention Encouragement Prize and four Nikkei Quality Control Literature Prizes. When not streamlining the engineering industry all over the world, Dr. Kakuro has enjoyed making ceramic art for 25 years, and is skilled in tougei, or traditional Japanese style pottery. He is married to Mikiko Amasaka, and is the father of Tatsuro, Akiko, and Arihiro.
