Digital mammography has been shown to be more sensitive than standard film mammography for the detection of breast cancer in women.
This is the first time American Radiology is offering mammography services at its Frederick location. Through the use of advanced computers equipped with specially designed digital detectors, images are produced in a high-resolution format and are displayed like a computer file. This technology produces images quicker and is able to be enhanced so that physicians may read the image more effectively versus a customary film x-ray. Unlike traditional mammograms, digital technology allows the physician to adjust the brightness, change contrast and zoom in for close-ups of specific areas of interest.
In addition to the enhanced reading capability, all digital mammography machines used by American Radiology Services are equipped with the newest tungsten x-ray tube technology. This advanced system, not typically used in standard digital mammography machines, is designed to minimize the level of x-ray radiation from a standard machine by nearly 30 percent.

Clinical trials and scientific investigations have found that digital mammography has proven more effective, allowing for a higher level of definition on the image among women with dense breasts, a group at higher risk for breast cancer.

Digital mammography services are typically covered by insurance companies the same way standard mammography services are handled.
