Anatoly Isaenko, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Born in Vladikavkaz, North Osssetia Alania, Russia, Dr. Isaenko always had a passion for history. After completing his undergraduate degrees, he pursued and completed a PhD in World History at Moscow State University in 1975 and quickly landed a teaching position as a professor of history at North Ossetian State University in Vladikavkaz, Russia. A well-known and well-respected member of the faculty at the university for 22 years, he also served as chair of the ancient and medieval history department for the last 13 years of his career at the university.

Relocating to the United States, Dr. Isaenko was accepted to teach as an assistant professor of history at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, in 2000. He became an associate professor 11 years ago and a full professor four years ago, currently teaching six different courses: HIS 1501, Revolution and Social Change in the World; HIS 1110, History and Culture; HIS 1130, Themes in Global History; HIS 3158, Ethics Conflicts: East versus West; HIS 3156, History of World Terrorism; and HIS 3155, Soviet Union and Russia.

Dr. Isaenko has diligently research topics global history, ethnic conflict, world terrorism, and the ancient history of the North Iranians and their impact on world civilizations. He has authored 10 books and edited collections, as well as 130 conference papers and other publications throughout his career. Two of his books include "Polygon of Satan: Ethnic Traumas and Conflicts in the Caucasus," now in its third edition since 2014 and "Mark M. Bliev, The Ossetian Embassy to St. Petersburg, 1749-1975: Joining of Ossetia to Russia," which was published in 2011, and translated from Russian to English.

Considered an expert on immigration and naturalization services in political asylum cases, Dr. Isaenko has been a leading expert and consultant on the Caucasus and Central Asia for Advanced Regional Analysis Course of the U.S. Army at the J.F.K. Special Warfare Center and School in Fort Bragg, N.C., since 2000. Notably, he formerly taught as a visiting professor and consultant at Mongolian State Pedagogical Institute in Ulan-Bator, and served as both a deputy and advisor of Hetman Administration of Terek Cossacks.

An associate member of the Association of Third World Studies and the American Association of Asian Studies, member of the Southeastern Medieval Association and Canadian Society of Anthropologists, among others, Dr. Isaenko is a longtime member of Phi Alfa Theta, where he was a 2001 scholarship recipient in the field of history. He has received numerous other awards since that time as well, including a 2007 Teaching Excellence Award by the board of governors of the University of North Carolina, and was named to the 2004 Outstanding Teachers of Colleges of Arts and Sciences by Appalachian State University. Dr. Isaenko received a 1996 Fulbright Senior Research Grant by Duke University, and won a 1989 Government's Award by the Mongolian State Committee of High Education.

Dr. Isaenko was also included in the 63rd edition of Who's Who in America. Married to Tatyana P. Kalashnikova for the past 54 years, Dr. Isaenko is the proud father of two children.
