"The service technicians must have thought I was crazy when I told them about my plan," joked Simon Joyce, Sales Director of Anchor Vans. "I do appreciate that it's unusual, but it actually makes a lot of sense. I'd heard about various studies that have been done on workplace environments, and how doing something as simple as changing the colour of a factory wall can increase productivity and reduce absenteeism. People have got used to looking at how to make a good office environment, but nobody seems to have done anything creative about improving a vehicle servicing workshop."
When asked why he hit upon the idea of recruiting a pianist, Simon said; "It started with moving a piano to the Anchor Vans site, just to make some room at home temporarily. Then I came across those studies I mentioned, and I started to think about the environment that we provide for our workshop technicians. There's always a radio on, as in most garages up and down the land, but I wanted to do something extraordinary to cheer up these dark winter months and show the technicians how much we appreciate their work. The piano was already here, and my piano playing is a bit too rusty, so recruiting the pianist was the logical next step. We're even thinking about having an open afternoon," Simon added, "so our customers can come and enjoy the music too."
