Dr. Lemnios, an engineer and retired interim vice-president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute since 2002, was initially inspired to pursue aeronautical engineering by his older brother, an electrical engineer and graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Prepared to pass on the torch to someone else, Dr. Lemnios commenced his career as interim vice-president in November 1999. Ready to spend more time with his wife and family, which now includes five grandchildren, he was originally taken on board at Rensselaer as a clinical professor in the mechanical engineering, aeronautical engineering, and mechanics department and as director at the Rotorcraft Technology Center, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1993.

Dr. Lemnios also served as vice president and dean from 1999 to 2002 and as adjunct professor from 2002 to 2003. Previous to his work at Rensselaer, Dr. Lemnios spent 32 years with Kaman Aerospace Corporation, first as a senior analytical engineer, then as chief of fluid mechanics, chief research engineer, director of research and technology, and finally assistant vice president of research and technology programs.

Some of Dr. Lemnios' pioneering work has included patented ideas for new rotor systems, both in model and full scale. He has also designed helicopter rotor systems and has done extensive research on the jet engine propeller. An Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and an Honorary Fellow of the American Helicopter Society, Dr. Lemnios spent time on a number of technical advisory committees for NASA, the U.S. Army, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of Maryland, and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He also served the AHS Board of Directors for five years and was Technical Director for two years for the AHS Annual Forum.
