Anesthesia Cabinets Answer Medication Concerns in the OR

The operating room benefits from the improved charge capture, medication availability, and reduced drug diversion that anesthesia cabinets offer.

OREM, UT, October 04, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The need for improved medication availability and security is critical since patient lives are often on the line in the operating room (OR). Providers report in the "2012 Anesthesia Cabinets: Is my Automation Vendor Ready?" brief that anesthesia cabinets have improved medication availability and security, among other key findings.

Medication cabinets have become commonplace in almost all hospital departments. However, the OR has been slow to adopt. Hesitancy comes from healthcare providers struggling to justify the cost and the benefit of having an anesthesia cabinet in both the pharmacy and the OR.

"The findings show that anesthesia cabinets don't only benefit the pharmacy, but also meet the needs of the operating room by providing better charge capture, increased medication security, and reduced drug diversion," said Research Director and report author Mark Allphin.

In fact, 50 percent of facilities that have already implemented anesthesia cabinets note that having an organized and controlled medication inventory is the main OR-specific benefit a cabinet brings.

Users of CareFusion, McKesson, and Omnicell rate attributes such as their product's functionality, reliability, and overall performance. Interestingly, all three vendors perform well. However, CareFusion edges out Omnicell and McKesson for the highest ranked spot in this study with top-tier functionality, better implementation and training scores, and a higher product rating.
