Antipsychotic Drugs Pose Serious Health Problems for Children
Prescription Drug Addiction is Not the Only Risk for Children Put on Antipsychotics

SYLMAR, CA, November 09, 2008 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Novus Medical Detox Facility of Pasco County, Florida (http://www.novusdetox.com) Director Steven L. Hayes urged parents to be vigilant in monitoring drugs prescribed for childhood behavior problems. "All psychiatric drugs come with side effects and the potential of addiction when given to children. But a recent study now documents other negative health effects of antipsychotic drugs that are increasingly being prescribed despite the absence of FDA approval for use on young people." said Mr. Hayes.

According to a study reported in the October issue of the Archives of Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine, children exposed to an antipsychotic drug have twice the risk for obesity, and triple the risk for type 2 diabetes, than those not exposed to the drugs. They also are at risk of "cardiovascular events" such as falling unconscious from sudden drops in blood pressure, diseases of the blood vessels, blood clots and strokes. Children who were given more than one type of psychiatric drug were twice as likely as the kids who only took one drug to suffer these dangerous side effects. The new study examined all factors associated with cardiovascular events and metabolic disturbance in 4,100 children and adolescents treated with antipsychotic drugs, comparing them with 4,500 kids who were not given drugs.

"The use of toxic substances to medicate children has been a tragedy for many families." Mr. Hayes continued, urging parents to take greater role with medical professionals treating their children.

For families who already find themselves dealing with prescription drug addiction or dependence, there is Novus Medical Detox Center. While many drug detox programs take place in a hospital, Novus Medical Detox Center specializes in handling drug dependencies in a private setting that is stress-free, comfortable and safe. The facility, set on 3.2 wooded acres 45 minutes north of Tampa, FL, offers private rooms, TV, DVDs and high speed internet access. Detoxification programs at Novus provide detox services for people wishing to withdraw from various drugs including opiate detox, heroin detox, psychotropic detox, alcohol detox, benzodiazepine detox and prescription drug detox. They can be reached at 877-250-8267.
