Born and raised in Newark, Antoinette Montague recently released her first CD, Pretty Blues but she has had many invaluable musical experiences. She worked in gospel and R&B ensembles after college, serves as the vice president of the International Women in Jazz, and considers Carrie Smith, Etta Jones, Della Griffin and Myrna Lake to be her mentors.
"She has a powerful voice, the ability to hold long notes without wavering, and a knack for making every song sound bluesy. Antoinette Montague's delivery is heartfelt, infectious and memorable." Scott Yanow, Los Angeles Jazz Scene
Antoinette has worked extensively in the New York area during the past decade with such musicians as Bill Easley, Norman Simmons, Winard Harper, Wycliffe Gordon, Frank Wess, the Duke Ellington Orchestra and Mike Longo's New York State of the Arts Orchestra and Lou Donaldson has introduced her to many of his audiences.
"If this is the future of Jazz or Blues or even Rock & Roll, then the music is in very good hands." Sound Bytes
Antoinette frequently appears at many Jazz Societies and Festivals. Antoinette is on the Board of the Boys and Girls Club of America, Better Business Bureau, The Jazz Committee of St Peters Church, International Women in Jazz, and the Women In Jazz Festival.
"Her ability to both belt the blues and swing with a jazz band is in full evidence on her debut album Pretty Blues. With a style that can be powerful one moment and soft-and delicate the next, her lusty and soulful voice reaches right into the heart of the listener." The Portland Observer
Recording and releasing Pretty Blues on the Consolidated Artists label raised her profile and has given her fame beyond the East Coast. On this highly enjoyable CD, Antoinette Montague is featured belting out blues, interpreting sensitive ballads, combining passion and sophistication, and making every song sound fresh, infectious and topical.
New York City Baha'i Center
The John Birks Gillespie Auditorium, dedicated to the late jazz great Dizzy Gillespie, is located within the New York City Baha'i Center. Beginning on January 6, 2004, the anniversary of Dizzy's death, his former pianist and musical director, Mike Longo, is presenting weekly jazz concerts every Tuesday evening at 8:00 and 9:30 PM. You will literally be transformed by the thundering swinging sound of The New York State of the Art Jazz Ensemble.
Bethany Baptist Church - 9th Annual Jazz Vespers
The Jazz Vespers Service is a synthesis of several traditions, each finding a unifying voice through the unique musical heritage that we call jazz. Jazz is the musical incense that collects and carries the prayers of a people. Numerous jazz composers have secured a place for this art form within the living tradition of the church.
Sometime in the year of 1870, a small group of Blacks gather in a home in Newark to worship. Today the Bethany Baptist Church stands in the shadow of a new century and celebrates their 125th Anniversary. There is a ministry to singles, an AIDS ministry, outreach to prisons, and the missionaries spearhead offering worship to residents of nursing homes. More than $225,000 has been contributed to Black colleges during the past nineteen years, and a similar amount has been allocated for scholarships.
Cape May Jazz Festival
Friends of Cape May Jazz, Inc. is a non-profit corporation consisting of a 10 member Executive Board that produces the Cape May Jazz Festival. Its mission is to develop and maintain the Greater Cape May, NJ, area as the hub for jazz in the mid-Atlantic region and to foster the appreciation of jazz as an American art form through the presentation of concerts, festivals, educational programs, workshops and jam sessions for musicians.
