Atlanta Heating Expert Offers Tips to Keep Furnace Running in the Winter

Atlanta heating expert explains important things to look for to keep your furnace operating properly all winter long.

ATLANTA, GA, January 07, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In the winter, no one wants to be left out in the cold by an improperly working furnace, but homeowners need to be sure they have properly maintained their furnace prior to those cold months.

Phil Montgomery, a heating repair expert and owner of Atlanta Heating and Air Conditioning, offers some tips below.
Furnaces or heating systems should be checked by a professional at least once a year. Having a furnace professionally serviced can keep the unit running well, meaning it will run less often, use less energy and heat more efficiently.

"My clients should have their furnaces professionally serviced once a year, but there are things they can do on their own to ensure their furnace is working correctly," says Cliff Montgomery, Atlanta heating and air conditioning expert.

1- Be sure vents are clear of any objects, such as carpet, drapes, furniture, etc. Anything covering a vent could become a fire hazard. Be certain there is nothing flammable near vents or the furnace itself.
2- Be sure there are no places where air can be leaning out - doors, windows, openings to the outside.
3- Consider installing a programmable thermostat, or lower it when you're out.
4- Regularly replace filters.

"Filters should be checked every month," says Montgomery, whose Atlanta air conditioning business has provided exceptional service for more than 40 years. "Filters need to be changed at least every three months."

Other tips to keep in mind:
1- Clean the inside of the furnace with a vacuum to remove debris inside. Look closely at the base of the heater and burners.
2- Be sure the safety switch on the furnace door is unobstructed.
3- Prevent fires by keeping the area around your furnace free of clutter.
4- Be sure visible wiring and electrical connections have no signs of burns or unraveling.
5- Install a carbon monoxide detector.
6- Watch the thermostat to be sure the temperature gauge moves correctly.

If a homeowner can't remember their last service call, or in any way thinks their furnace is in need of repair, they should call their local heating repair company as soon as possible. With proper attention, a heating unit will keep homeowners warm throughout the long winter months.
