/24-7PressRelease/ - October 06, 2006 - Pfizer Inc said its Lipitor (Atorvastatin) drug is more effective than Simvastatin for cutting the jeopardy of additional heart attacks in patients who have recently had a heart attack. Atorvastatin is used for the treatment of high cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It is an oral drug that lowers the level of cholesterol in the blood.

Simvastatin is a cholesterol-lowering drug. It conquers the production of cholesterol by the liver. It lowers overall blood cholesterol as well as blood LDL cholesterol levels. Cholesterol is a soft, waxy stuff found among the lipids in the bloodstream and in all your body's cells.

According to Data which was presented by Pfizer in Spain that patients who had a recent heart attack and took Pfizer's Lipitor (Atorvastatin calcium) 80 mg dose experienced significantly fewer heart attacks than patients taking Simvastatin 20-40 mg dose.

A heart attack is the loss of heart muscle from the abrupt blockage of a coronary artery by a blood clot. Coronary arteries are blood vessels that provide the heart muscle with blood and oxygen. Blockage of a coronary artery deprives the heart muscle of blood and oxygen, causing injury to the heart muscle. Injury to the heart muscle causes chest pain and pressure.

Patients who took Lipitor 80 mg dose had a 46 pct drop in the risk of experiencing another heart attack, and a 34 pct drop in the risk of experiencing major coronary events, which included heart attack, cardiac death and cardiac arrest, compared with patients who took Simvastatin 20-40 mg dose, it said.

A data show, benefit of intensive treatment with Lipitor 80 mg in very high-risk heart attack patients and Lipitor 80 mg was well-tolerated in these patients.
