Identify what you need
It is important to carefully think about what an individual wants to get out of a mentorship, for example specific skills about the industry, on how to close a deal or how to develop in the industry. AusCorp Connect recommend reading about the relevant topics or to attend training courses in addition to having a mentor.

Evaluate yourself
AusCorp Connect say it is important to understand what a relationship with a mentor means. "If you cannot be committed, stop looking. If you find someone who sees potential in you and is happy to invest their time in your development. In return, they will expect a high level of commitment."

Identify possible mentors
AusCorp Connect recommends to ask yourself the following questions: 'Who are the most influential people I know?' 'What connections do they have?' 'Where are they in their careers?' 'What are their goals?' "Look for someone you can identify yourself with, someone you respect and who wants to help you succeed", says John Hanley of AusCorp Connect.

Approach them directly
Once a person is identified as possible mentor, AusCorp Connect recommend approaching them directly by contacting them and building rapport.

Know your role
It is important to understand that the purpose of a mentor is not to be around 24/7 to coach people on personal matters. A mentor acts as a voice of reason and is there to support when needed. In difficult situations, they help guide individuals back to the top.

AusCorp Connect say mentoring is important for entrepreneurs. Initiative must however come from the individual. In order to support small business owners and entrepreneurial-minded people, AusCorp Connect offer a Business Development Program, designed to help individuals to get the relevant skills and guidance to start up their own company. The program entails topics such as Sales and Marketing, Leadership, Campaign Management, Finance, Personal Development, Business Administration, Customer Service and Client Management. "We want to see businesses thrive and look at a bright future", says MD John Hanley. "Therefore we have designed our Business Development Program. This is our way to support business owners and help drive economic growth."
