Recent online dating trends reflect evolving social realities, as opposed to individual personalities such a timidness. A study carried out by an Australian University looked at the how and why of romantic partnerships in cyber-land.

Political Scientists from an Australian University are researching the growth in the growing amount of singles who use online dating sites in Australia.

Some statistics from this report shows that in just one month alone, there were nearly 1 million unique visitors to online dating sites in Australia, with over 1 million more existing users returning to dating sites. There are more than 60 well known and profitable online dating sites, and nearly 200 nieche dating sites catering for certain religions or sexual preference for example.

Interestingly, the studies also revealed that the reasons for the expanding trend in online dating are mainly social. A number of participants in the study used online dating sites for the following reasons: an alternative method of meeting singles or friends after ending a long term relationship, it was also a way of meeting singles or friends after moving to a new residential location, online dating was a good option when friends are not available. It was a new idea and concept after bad offline dating experiences.

Other attractions to online dating sites was the potential to meet a large number of singles or friends in a short amount of time. There was a diverse selection of people to choose from with instant access to information and helped with compatibility issues that people see as priorities such as smokers and non smokers, whether potential partners have children, and other compatibility priorities.

The inability to assess instant chemistry when using online dating sites was a disadvantage that could only be overcome by meeting offline. Other noted disadvantages were that other members could be misleading in their appearance and professional status. Miscommunications sometimes had a negative effect with online dating as this issue seems to be a common occurrence.

Researches agree that there should be more available information on the effects of cyber-communication, and that the dating sites themselves should give this some attention.
